An exciting new opportunity exists for an enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic individual to co-ordinate the MSCC pathway within West and East Kent. This is a new service so you will have the opportunity to guide and further establish the service.

The post-holder will provide a central point of referral and advice for clinical teams responsible for patients with MSCC. In addition to working alongside the core MSCC team the post holder will also work alongside the consultant clinical oncologists, consultant radiographers, acute oncology and ward teams on both sites as well as our colleagues at King’s College Hospital to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised.

The post holder would be required to work across sites frequency and the working pattern will be determined with the Head of Radiotherapy Services.

Opportunities to be involved in service development is encouraged.

Training and support will be available to support the post holder to develop within the role.

All posts are linked to a competency package which enables radiotherapists to progress through a career pathway.

This is a fixed term/secondment post with the contact starting at the start date and ending the 31 March 2026 with a possibility of extending the contract

Main duties of the job

A central point of referral and advice for clinical teams across the network for the management of patients with metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC).

A central point of contact for co-ordinating urgent palliative radiotherapy for MSCC patients requiring radiotherapy.

Ensure a smooth process and compliance to national and local waiting time targets and other national, regional and local standards.

Ensure that MSCC patients are followed-up in order for the appropriate post-radiotherapy rehabilitation and cancer treatments to be initiated.

Work in a team based clinical support service, providing cross-cover and continuity of the service.

Act as a source of knowledge and expertise in the process and stages of the patient care pathway for MSCC.

Undertake radiographer-led palliative planning of MSCC under the direction of consultant clinical oncologists and consultant radiographers.

To initiate audits, report results and where necessary, to implement change.

Travel across sites & to Regional and National meetings

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Significant working experience in Therapeutic Radiography or Master's degree
  • Registerable with HCPC
  • Operator and referrer under IR(ME)R
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Undertaken accredited academic development
  • MSc modules in review/consent
  • Radiotherapy planning experience

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience as a clinical radiotherapist
  • To have worked in a clinical environment
  • Have worked within a multidisciplinary team
  • Understands the cancer patients pathway
  • Knowledge of relevant national standards
  • Knowledge of audit and research process
  • Working Knowledge of government targets
  • Range of clinical experience for specialist area
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Cancer Network Strategy
  • Participates in multidisciplinary meetings
  • Knowledge/experience of the MSCC pathway

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Time management of themselves and others
  • Analytical and decision making skills
  • To be able to operate as an autonomous practitioner
  • Knowledge of radiotherapy techniques
  • Ability to participate in driving service development
