Main duties of the job
Would you like to work in a regional Paediatric Oncology Unit on the South Coast?
We are offering an exciting opportunity in our daycare unit for permanent, full, or part-time, band 6 nurses who wish to build on their existing experience, clinical skills and leadership qualities to join our friendly and supportive nursing team at Southampton Children’s Hospital.
Piam Brown Unit is the Principle Treatment Centre (PCT) for Paediatric Oncology in the South of England. The unit consists of a 12 bedded inpatient ward and adjoining daycare unit within Southampton Children’s Hospital.
We care for patients who have been diagnosed with cancer who require Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (chemotherapy) from birth up to 16 years old.
Our region covers Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Wight. We have 12 Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCUs) throughout the region.
The unit is a MASCC-Designated centre of excellence in Supportive Care in Cancer, one of only 2 centres in the UK.
We have a team of 8 Oncology Nurse Specialists based on the unit who support families in our care.
We have dedicated clinical facilitators on the unit to enable us to provide the best possible platform to achieve the career that you want with our oncology education pathway.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
WHAT YOU’LL DO- Participate in the checking and administration of intravenous drugs.
- Participate in the checking and administration of intravenous chemotherapy.
- Give and receive regular reports on the progress of patients, immediately acting on any changes in the patients’ condition, and reporting them to the relevant health care professional.
- Work with medical staff and other members of the health care team locally & regionally to ensure that treatments are carried out within agreed policies.
- Co-ordinate the day-to-day running of the day unit alongside existing band 6 colleagues, acting up for band 7 manager as required.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
You will need to have:- RSCN/RN Child Branch qualification.
- Previous experience of working in Paediatric oncology.
- Competent in the administration of intravenous therapy.
- Competent in the administration of chemotherapy.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential criteria- Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
- Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
- Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
- Ward management experience
- Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
- Experience in an acute hospital setting
- Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice
- Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
- Ability to demonstrate clinical decision making and judgement
- Commitment to the post and Care Group responsibilities
- Commitment to continuing professional development
- Experience in handling adverse events and complaints
- Appraisal skills
- Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed
- Some insight into budget management
