LONG COVID - BAND 6 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 6 occupational therapist to join the Long Covid Pathway. This role involves working across the Long Covid pathway, from assessment to group and 1:1 intervention in the community.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, skilled and highly motivated to work in a continuously developing service. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in development of the future of this service. As an occupational therapist in this service, you will be utilising your core occupational therapy skills in both physical and mental health to support service users to develop the skills to self manage their symptoms.

You will be supported by a Band 7 and Band 8A occupational therapists and a cohesive multidisciplinary team to develop your skills.
  • To manage a specialist caseload within the Long Covid rehabilitation pathway based at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital Trust using clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis to support assessments using a client-centred approach and current evidence base to assess, treat, implement, evaluate and document Occupational Therapy interventions.
  • Assessments and Therapeutic interventions may occur in the outpatient clinics, community clinics or the patient’s home.
  • To be responsible for the assessment, treatment, implementation and documentation of Occupational Therapy interventions within the Long Covid pathway.
  • To develop positive and collaborative working relationships across Health and Social Care.
  • To be responsible for the maintenance and development of your CPD and continuous learning.
  • To supervise and develop therapy assistants.
  • To be responsible for the education of Occupational Therapy Students on Fieldwork Practice.

  1. To be responsible for providing specialist individual client centred assessments within Long Covid Rehabilitation program. To address occupational performance skills, patterns, context or contexts and activity demands in collaboration with patients and carers both in the community.
  2. To undertake specialist multi-needs assessment, considering Post Covid symptoms using analysis and synthesis to develop individual goal and task orientated intervention plans in collaboration with patients, carers and colleagues.
  3. To carry out occupational performance assessments and interventions in both virtual and face to face environments.
  4. To design Post Covid fatigue management plans, under the guidance of the band 7 occupational therapist, and carry out sessions virtually or face to face, in 1:1 or group environments.
  5. Ensure reviews demonstrate ethical clinical reasoning and problem-solving techniques to determine agreed outcomes across health and social care.
  6. Accurately record all professional judgements and decisions taken, keeping records of plans in accordance with Occupational Therapy Policies.
  7. To maintain high standards of patient care working within the Occupational Therapy Code of Conduct and Occupational Therapy Service Standards and Procedures.
  8. To allocate appropriate patient related tasks and ongoing treatment to Occupational Therapy assistants and technical staff, reviewing and monitoring outcomes.
  9. Identify risks associated within the clinic and home environments relevant to the associated medical conditions and to highlight these to relevant senior staff in order to ensure patient and clinician safety.
  10. To be proactive in the monitoring, recording and reporting of changes in clinical practice which may influence Occupational Therapy Service delivery.
  11. To use critical reflection and evidence of best practice to develop and enhance the patient and carer experience.
  12. To demonstrate understanding and application of National guidelines and legislation relating to health and social care and their impact on Occupational Therapy practice.
