Job overview

A primary function of the practice development midwife is to actively engage in the development, implementation and evaluation of midwifery practice. This will include review, and development of clinical guidelines in response to case reviews and the recommendations of national and local bodies.

The post holder will lead practice development in all areas of the maternity service as a member of the maternity practice development team. The post holder will work clinically with midwives in all clinical areas to ensure that these midwives are assessed in the breadth of clinical competencies required to ensure the delivery of safe, compassionate midwifery practice.

The post holder will have the responsibility to ensure that newly qualified and internationally educated midwives successfully demonstrate the necessary clinical competencies assuring that their practice is evidence based and safe.

Main duties of the job
  • Develop and maintain electronic training databases for midwifery and support staff.
  • Develop and support the delivery of education and training programmes within the maternity unit to meet the needs of the registered midwifery workforce and support staff.
  • Deliver training on designated programmes to address midwifery requirements both in a classroom setting and within the clinical area.
  • Participate in developing and facilitating training and education programmes with the Trust Workforce Development Team.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, supervision and shadowing opportunities to each individual to support their professional development.
  • Provide training and support to preceptors, and mentors to enable them to provide the appropriate supervision within the clinical areas.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • First degree or equivalent advanced study
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree or willingness to work towards achieving

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Essential criteria
  • Practice teacher or other teaching qualification or willingness to work towards
  • Practice Assessor
Desirable criteria
  • ALSO / NLS instructor
  • Clinical Audit and service evaluation

SKILLS/ABILITIES

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate effective written communication
  • Ability to contribute pro-actively to a multi-disciplinary team
