Are you a professional Sonographer with a commitment to first-class patient care and the drive to work within a high-performing team? An exciting opportunity is now available for enthusiastic, motivated, and experienced Sonographers to join our Ultrasound Team across both Main Ultrasound for and Maternity Ultrasound for Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

In Main Ultrasound, the service is Sonographer-led, receiving referrals from GPs, outpatients, wards, and the Emergency Department. The department also provides a lithotripsy service, for which full training is provided. This role is ideal for those looking to develop their general ultrasound skills and gain experience across a range of complex cases.

For Obstetrics & Gynaecology, you will manage a varied workload, including high- and low-risk pregnancies and gynaecological ultrasounds. The department supports CPD, audit and research. There is a strong commitment to the training of student Sonographers, and proven experience in this area is advantageous.

The successful candidate will have a professional and practical attitude with strong imaging and reporting skills. They should be comfortable working under pressure, multi-tasking and liaising with multidisciplinary teams. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, with current or recent NHS experience to work both autonomously and in a team environment.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide a high-quality, comprehensive and efficient Ultrasound service across both Main Ultrasound and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
  • To issue timely diagnostic reports based on Ultrasound findings.
  • To undertake all aspects of work in the Ultrasound Department, appropriate to grade, including the supervision and mentoring of junior staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Independently undertake general ultrasound sessions, providing comprehensive and accurate reports.
  • Conduct a wide variety of diagnostic ultrasound examinations while maintaining high professional standards.
  • Deliver a high-quality, patient-focused professional service.
  • Adapt techniques for each examination to meet individual patient needs.
  • Analyse clinical information to determine the most appropriate scanning method and technique.
  • Work proactively within a multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective professional practices, operation of policies, and adherence to standards.
  • Plan, assess, deliver,and evaluate own workload in close association with the clinical lead.
  • Participate in the induction and teaching of innovations within the clinical specialty.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical practice and patient care.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of ultrasound equipment, ensuring proper and safe use while reporting any malfunctions.
  • Undertake audit of practice and present results as required.
  • Engage in ongoing CPD to maintain professional registration.
  • Stay updated with current techniques, clinical advances, and changing trends in ultrasound.

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Must have HCPC Registration as Sonographer
  • Diploma in Medical Imaging (Obs and Gynae and medical ultrasound) OR Post Graduate Diploma (Obs and Gynae and Medical Ultrasound)
  • DQASS or FMF accreditation in 1st trimester screening
  • Evidence of current Continuing Professional Development activity
  • Evidence of a sound level of computer literacy
  • UK recognised post graduate diploma
Desirable criteria
  • MSc in Ultrasound
  • Audit experience in Medical Imaging and/or 1st trimester screening

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post graduate experience in a wide range of ultrasound examinations relevant to post
  • Experience within an NHS setting
Desirable criteria
  • Track record of effective staff supervision, teaching and training
  • Experience within a maternity unit

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Sound knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and understanding of complex pathologies
  • Excellent technical ability, being able to produce high quality images and interpret their relevance
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise own activities accordingly
  • Willingness to flex to needs meet the needs of the service

  • Evidence of problem solving and decision making skills
  • Understanding of Quality Management systems and processes
