Key Tasks and Responsibilities of the Post Management Co-ordinate the activities of less experienced & support staff in the treatment of clients within designated area. Undertake the supervision and appraisal of staff as delegated by line manager identifying developmental needs and support the individuals in the development of their Personal Development Plans.
Be responsible for the supervision and assessment of physiotherapy students on practice placement within the Health Board (within clinical area). Review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal.
Establish and monitor relationships with colleagues (both multi-disciplinary and multi-agency) to improve effectiveness of service delivery and reduce duplication. Identify and minimise interpersonal conflict. Clinical Develop and deliver specialised programmes of care and support less experienced staff in the delivery of these programmes.
To be accountable for the direct delivery of the physiotherapy programmes of care to clients within designated areas. Direct less experienced and support staff in their delivery of, and responsibility for patient/ client care. To be clinically competent to provide advice and treatment to individuals with diverse healthcare needs with particular reference to medical conditions of caseload.
Undertake physiotherapy assessments for a designated caseload, addressing physical performance and skill deficits. Work with clients to identify physiotherapy goals as part of the overall care plan. Plan and implement individual and/or group interventions, in collaboration with the client, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
Develop specialised programmes of care using specialised approaches and models of practice. Monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of the intervention and record outcomes for all clients on caseload, audit outcomes and share with peers and members of the MDT.
Respect the individuality, values, and cultural and religious diversity of clients and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs. Apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on lifestyle changes and adaptations to the clients social and physical environment.
Participate in 7 days working as per physiotherapy service policy. Demonstrate the ability to acknowledge limitations in own practice and seek help to develop professional competence/ practice. Work autonomously to undertake physiotherapy assessments for a designated caseload within this setting, addressing physical performance and skill deficits by diagnosing the clients problems, using analytical skills to formulate solutions.
Make judgements involving highly complex facts/ situations requiring analysis/ interpretation and comparisons of a wide range of therapeutic options in order to decide on the best course of intervention and accurate prognosis and comprehensive discharge plans.
Demonstrate highly developed dexterity, coordination and palpatory senses for assessment and manual treatment of patients. Professional Hold a qualification enabling registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Physiotherapist.
Adhere to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) & HCPC Code of Ethics, Professional Conduct and standards of Practice. Keep up to date and understand the requirements of and the implications for service delivery of national standards e.g. NICE. Use/ apply complex specialist skills underpinned by advanced theoretical knowledge of professional practice in order to maintain professional competence and fitness to practise as a Specialist Physiotherapist.
Maintain a professional portfolio for CPD recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities, reflective practise and peer review to inform a Personal Development Plan. Be aware of professional developments in assessment and intervention within service area, evaluate/ monitor their effectiveness and implement as best practice.
Understand the influence of national and local Health, Social Care and Well Being Strategies on local physiotherapy practice. Service Delivery Demonstrate the ability to assist the Physiotherapy Clinical Lead to manage, monitor and evaluate team.
Manage client caseload autonomously. Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings, contributing to decisions with regard to the patients care. Plan open/closed group sessions for selected client group to deliver specialised interventions, modifying the programme according to the current needs of client group.
Develop an intervention programme for each individual on the caseload, which may be delivered on a 1:1 basis or as a group, which utilises physiotherapy skills appropriate to each individuals needs. Plan and organise a number of complex activities/ intervention programmes Adhere to departmental policies and procedures that facilitate the smooth running of the service, and to communicate any problems or discrepancies to line manager immediately.
Initiate, plan and implement induction, training and education of students and support staff in this setting. Develop the work plan/ programme for the staff and client group within this team. Be responsible for the management of own workload and caseload.
Leadership Advise the Physiotherapy Team Lead on issues related to service planning and development in designated clinical area. Implement policies and proposes and contributes to changes in working practices/ procedures for own area. Attend Physiotherapy Service meetings as directed and contribute to the personal and professional growth of the service.
Adhere to the standards of practice for Physiotherapy (CSP/HCPC and service specific) and ensure that minimum requirements are met, evaluate practice against standards and review if necessary. Follow Health Board, Physiotherapy Service and professional policies, protocols and guidelines.
Demonstrate an understanding of specific national policies/ legislation/ guidelines and their implications for area of responsibility. Demonstrate a detailed understanding of clinical governance and take responsibility for its application to the delivery of physiotherapy within own area of work.
Communication Establish rapport with the client before applying other professional skills. Undertake advanced Specialist Physiotherapy assessments for a designated caseload of clients with complex needs, addressing physical performance and skills deficits.
Work with clients/carers to negotiate and identify their Physiotherapy goals as part of their overall therapy plan. Plan and implement individual and/or group interventions, in collaboration with the client, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
Monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of the intervention. Demonstrate the ability to balance professional issues such as confidentiality and duty of care in a multi-disciplinary setting in order to work effectively.
Provide and receive complex sensitive information in an understandable form to patients, carers, colleagues, and students where motivational, persuasive, empathetic and re-assurance skills are required. Communicate effectively with other members of the Physiotherapy Service and multi-disciplinary team (internal and external to the Health Board) both formally and informally.
Share acquired knowledge and skills with members of the Physiotherapy Service and multi-disciplinary team, peers, students using a variety of teaching methods and presentation skills. Establish robust communication networks with clients, carers, and other health and social care professionals involved in the clients care.
Education and Training/Staff Management Motivate staff in order to maximise performance and facilitate areas in order to enhance job satisfaction. Participate in the induction, training and education of students and other staff in this setting.
Deliver training to less experienced staff through their Development Programmes. Contribute to the supervision and education of work experience placements. Maintain a professional portfolio for CPD recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities, reflective practise and peer review to inform a Personal Development Plan.
Information Resources Ensure that written /electronic records and activity data are up to date and maintained in accordance with Professional and Health Board standards. Undertake audit of clinical information using research methodology. Research and Development Assist in the planning, evaluation and audit of practice, clinical pathways and protocols within own area.
Work with Physiotherapy clinical lead to identify own learning needs, acknowledging previous experience and personal skills. Be actively responsible for maintaining own CPD and having an up-to-date personal portfolio. Facilitate staff in the maintenance of their CPD portfolios and Personal Development Plans.
Critically evaluate current research and apply to practice. Participate in local audit, research and development appropriate to area. Continue to develop research skills as appropriate to area. Demonstrate active membership of CSP and/or Special Interest Group to support current evidence-based practice.
