Based within the Family Health Directorate the post holder will be a proactive role-model, who supports the practice and development of our newly qualified midwives (NQM). The post holder will have a visible presence on both campuses and within the community setting.

With compassionate leadership, guidance and direction to NQM, supporting as they transition student to midwife, to develop and enhance their clinical competence, and confidence, making sure that the provision of high quality, evidence based clinical care is embedded in their everyday practice and received on every occasion by the people who use the local maternity service.

The post holder will be required to evaluate and implement the development of programmes and clinical skills competencies including the preceptorship programme to ensure that they meet the needs of both the staff and the service.

You will be responsible for the continuous monitoring of the achievement and suitability of required competencies, for NQMs, building supportive individualised development plans in partnership with the identified staff member as appropriate to achieve specifically identified outcomes.

Patient care and clinical expertise

Ø provide clinical expertise, specialist advice and support across the whole spectrum of the service related to the training and development agenda

Ø Be an expert clinical practitioner, prioritising and planning workload to including working clinically to support the newly qualified midwives

Ø Demonstrate compassionate, visionary leadership, working in partnership with the Maternity Workforce Matron, to create a safe learning environment that is conducive to encouraging and enabling newly qualified midwives to grow and flourish and where staff feel safe and at ease to access support and/or escalate concerns should they arise

Ø Support newly qualified midwives to ensure that an integrated approach in training and education meets the diversity both within our team as within the local community which we serve.

Ø Assisting newly qualified midwives to identify both their individual learning needs and the effective learning activities required to meet these needs while fostering a positive attitude towards the benefits and opportunities of life-long learning.

Ø Role model mindfulness of the cultural diversity within the workplace ensuring demonstration and promotion of inclusivity at all times

Ø Maintain presence in the clinical areas. Continually lead, support and guide staff in the evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of care given, implementing necessary changes to ensure high standards of care is given

Ø Support with the recruitment and induction of new starters in collaboration with the maternity workforce team

Development

Ø Actively contribute to the identification and development of clinical competencies expected for every level of midwifery practice, projecting the needs of future workforce, developing a comprehensive and cohesive strategy for training and development of staff

Ø Participate in the induction/orientation of newly qualified midwives, using your clinical skills to support their development and sign off competencies. Coach and supervise when needed and provide pastoral care.

Ø Maintain accurate records of individual staff members development and progress throughout their preceptorship programme, identifying support when required and setting objectives and assessment of competencies/agreed plan for future meetings

Ø Be responsible for identification of own continuing educational needs and development, actively seeking programmes of learning to maintain and enhance own capability as a clinical expert

Clinical Leadership

Ø Focus on newly qualified midwives, maintaining a highly visible presence on wards/departments including community

Ø Act as an effective role model and an accessible support to staff members, promoting collaborative multi-disciplinary working

Ø Responsible for ensuring newly qualified midwives are aware of the systems and processes in place at NUH

Ø Create an environment that is supportive and conducive to learning

Ø Maintain awareness of local and national health care issues such as NICE, CQC reports and relevant national maternity publications

Ø Develop opportunities for staff to access appropriate education and training programmes, and other learning opportunities such as shadowing, mentoring and action learning, ensuring equity and fairness of access

Clinical Support

Ø Ability to work clinically on the antenatal/postnatal wards and labour suite

Ø Support the newly qualified midwives to complete their blood transfusion packages and commitment to becoming a face to face assessor

Ø Able to support with suturing

Ø Provide knowledge and guidance to newly qualified midwives to complete their IV therapy passport and medicines management package

Ø Become a medical devices assessor to ensure the newly qualified midwives have the correct access to provide safe care, this includes blood glucose monitors and blood gas analyser

Ø Ability to work cross site

Ø Ability to work days, nights and weekends, managing your diary effectively and flexibly
