Job overview

Ideally, we are looking for an RCT or AHCS registered radiation protection technologist to appoint at NHS band 6 salary. However, we are also happy to consider appointing a technically minded, enthusiastic, and motivated individual to undertake in-house training to achieve this, at a training salary.

The minimum requirement for in-house training is a level 4 or above technical qualification such as an HNC, HND or degree.

The team currently is comprised of a chief technologist, four band 6 technologists (including this post), nine physicists and four trainees, including a PTP technologist apprentice trainee. We are based at Castle Hill Hospital on the slopes of the Yorkshire Wolds, and provide physics support to the acute Trusts either side of the Humber Estuary, as well as to other trusts and private providers, for a wide range of specialisms including radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy.

We support a substantial number of private dental clinics and veterinary centres over a large part of England.

Applications from job seekers who require current Skilled Worker Visa sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. You can determine the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship for the post by assessing your circumstances against criteria specified on the gov.uk website.

Main duties of the job

To help imaging departments to ensure that radiation doses to staff, patients and others are kept as low as reasonably achievable while maintaining good diagnostic image quality. Your role in achieving this will include
  • Testing of a wide range of X-ray imaging systems, principally in healthcare settings, but including some veterinary and other systems, and providing reports and recommendations to clients.
  • Advising clients on best practice and radiation regulatory requirements. This may involve some delivery of basic training.
  • Travel, on average several times a week, sometimes long distance (e.g. Newcastle). The department has two pool cars, but use of own car may be necessary at times when these are unavailable.

In our team, we believe in utilising the knowledge and skills of clinical technologists to their full extent, to provide the highest quality service to our clients and their patients.
