Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust is a friendly, integrated healthcare provider focused on improving the life chances and health outcomes of our diverse population.

We have three strategic objectives:

People: To cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff.
Patients: To be good or outstanding at everything we do.

Population: To work seamlessly with partners to improve lives.

We run services from Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, Sandwell Health Campus, City Health Campus, Rowley Regis Community Hospital, Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre, The Lyng and Leasowes Intermediate Care Centre. Our GP practices and community teams provide care in schools, healthcare centres and at home.

Developing and caring for our People is fundamental. We were one of the first Trusts to provide the Real Living Wage, as well as a Live and Work scheme to support people at risk of homelessness into paid work and training. We offer a range of staff benefits, health & wellbeing support and will help you to bring your ambition to life through our bespoke training and development programmes.

As “People” is one of our three strategic objectives, we make a continued commitment to prioritise support for all our colleagues.

Healthcare services have a significant impact on the environment. We are committed to embedding sustainable practices. We expect all colleagues to support the delivery of our Green Strategic Plan and to drive positive changes in their department.

Job overview

Are you a newly qualified pharmacist, or a pharmacist from another sector looking for your next challenge and keen to experience a further range of clinical specialties?

There is an opportunity for a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our rotational STEP Band 7 pharmacist programme.

We are looking for someone with drive, enthusiasm and commitment. You will have excellent people skills and the ability to work with and influence staff at many levels.

Experience of working in hospital within a patient focused environment is essential while a keenness to use knowledge, skills and experience to improve patient care through the delivery of efficient medicines management services (including out of hours services & on-call) is essential.

The programme will allow you to gain the skills and experience to meet the requirements of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Foundation Framework and will provide you with a portfolio of evidence for further career progression.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide high quality pharmaceutical services to key areas on rotation including paediatric wards, critical care, aseptics and nutrition specialities (to name a few!) as well as contributing to core ward commitments, including weekend and on call services.

There will also be opportunities to gain leadership skills by co-ordination of specific teams of the clinical pharmacy service, alongside participation in Trust projects and departmental governance objectives within set rotations.

Working for our organisation

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWB) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), has now opened and will continue to provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the department now works across multiple sites where MMUH is the base of this role.

If cross site if needed to complete a set rotation and this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding.

The development of services within the new hospital now plays an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

SWB continues to strive to deliver our three strategic objectives:

  1. Our People – to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
  2. Our Patients – to be good or outstanding in everything we do
  3. Our Population – to work seamlessly with our partners to improve live

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Pharmacy is a progressive department, keen to embrace innovative ideas to better improve our clinical service model.

Following significant investment for MMUH, our pharmacy department has led the innovations in Omnicell/automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), AMis Smart carts and Bristol Maid keyless access lockers for patient medications which are in place across most acute areas of work - improving drug security and safe administration of drugs across the rest of the organisation.

Robotic dispensing is well established, now including an out of hours on call shute and we have successfully implemented Electronic Prescribing and Administration throughout the Trust for a number of years now. We are working towards innovative models of delivering clinical pharmacy services as part of our 7 day working plans.

The post holder will be required to complete specialist training packs associated with each clinical rotation and complete additional RPS portfolio requirements to progress through the STEP programme. Full details can be found in the Job Description and Personal Specification.

Post holder will be supported by the internal Education and Training team aw s well as accredited medicines management trained technicians to deliver these goals.
