Exeter School is the leading co-educational day school in the Southwest, educating over 1,000 pupils aged 3-18. We are looking to appoint a part-time teacher of English to join our school, a school of great character.

For September 2025, we seek an enthusiastic, well-qualified graduate to join this strong department. The post is approximately 50% full time. This position would be equally suited to either a newly qualified or a more experienced applicant. The applicant should be keen to contribute to the broader life of the school through cultural, sporting or other extra-curricular activities.

The English department is currently a team of 8 outstanding teachers, both full and part time, who share a passion and enthusiasm for the subject and its corresponding skills. As a department we aim to inspire pupils to study English literature at A Level and beyond; we achieve this through a positive and supportive environment, engaging pupils with the subject, and enhancing our classroom provision with a programme of extra-curricular activities.

The aim is to offer academic challenge to enrich the curriculum, whilst also fully supporting all pupils to achieve their best.

The English department is located at the heart of the school, in the Andrews building, and is supported with a range of library and reading lessons that ensure the subject is linked across all school areas. The staff are friendly, supportive and willing to share their knowledge and expertise to make a transition to the department smooth for pupils and staff.

In terms of public examinations, our English results are very strong and well above national averages. At A Level, 100% of students achieved A*- C and 45% achieved A*- A in 2024, studying the Pearson linear course. All pupils in U5 (Year 11) take Pearson IGCSE English language and AQA GCSE English literature.

In summer 2024, 100% passed both GCSE courses with slightly stronger results in IGCSE language: 39% achieved 9s and 82% 7-9s in language, while 14% gained 9s and 54% achieved 7-9 in literature. We are also introducing the SLE (spoken language endorsement) to our course this year.

The department offers an extensive range of extra-curricular activities for pupils, ranging from debating to creative writing, and reading groups to podcasts. We encourage pupils to read widely and participate in competitions, whether it is ‘Poetry by Heart’ or the House competition: Exeter Speaks Out.

We also have links with the BudLit festival. As a department we are consistently looking to offer more extra and co-curricular opportunities from author talks to theatre visits, including using live theatre links! We are always looking for fresh ideas to add to the vibrancy of the department, the breadth of interests and the depth of study.

The closing date for applications is Thursday 15 May 2025 at noon. We anticipate that interviews will be held on Tuesday 20 May 2025.

The role will attract a competitive salary as well as generous benefits including employer pension contribution, free school lunch during term time, free on-site parking, discretionary staff discount on school fees and use of the indoor swimming pool and fitness suite.

Exeter School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from any appropriately qualified person. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Employment is subject to the receipt of two satisfactory references provided specifically for this post and addressed to the school, and to satisfactory DBS clearance.

This post falls into the category of Regulated Activity. Exeter School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
