Main duties of the job
  • It is essential that the successful candidate can demonstrate appropriate training & experienceorthopaedic trauma surgery including complex periarticular fractures of the upper and lower limbs.
  • The successful candidate will need to work closely with the current Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and multi-disciplinary team within the Orthopaedic department, and with colleagues across the Trust
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
  • To share with colleagues' responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Services including General Orthopaedic On-Call
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and Medical Staudent
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The job plan on appointment will consist of a 10PA activity contact. The SPA component is made up of core activities (appraisal, revalidation, CME, routine departmental meetings etc.) and non-core activities. Non-core activities are discussed and agreed within the Trust (via an agreed tariff and, on occasion, through ad personal agreement).
Non-core SPA may reflect activities such as educational supervision, research, leadership and quality improvement. Following appointment, non-core SPA may be used to participate in our consultant development programme, or in acquiring or consolidating specific skills and expertise.

Non-core SPA is only available if specific activities and objectives are mutually agreed in job planning.

Qualifications/Registrations

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree
  • FRCS (Tr+Orth) or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration and licence
  • Completion certificate of training or equivalent, (or expected to achieve within 6 months at time of application)
Desirable criteria
  • Higher qualification in research, teaching, leadership or management
  • Specialist Register of the GMC

Experience/Training

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 9 years post-graduate experience, including Specialist registrar training in approved posts or equivalent
  • 12 months experience at ST8 or fellowship in a UK Major Trauma Centre
  • Minimum 12 months fellowship training
  • Breadth of orthopaedic trauma surgery including trauma lists, trauma clinics and trauma on call
Desirable criteria
  • Second period of 6-12 months fellowship training with demonstrable specialty skillset relevant to the post – upper limb or lower limb reconstruction/arthroplasty

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and application of up to date evidence based practice
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at relevant trauma specific conferences/courses in the past 36 months

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Extensive operative experience in general and periarticular trauma of both the upper and lower extremities
  • Experience of managing patients with complex needs and fragility fractures
  • Experience in the multi-disciplinary management of patients.
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
  • In-patient and Out-patient Care
Desirable criteria
  • Skilled in upper or lower limb arthroplasty for trauma

Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
  • Evidence of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Ability to work constructively in a team environment

Leadership Skills

Essential criteria
  • To motivate and develop both medical staff and non-medical staff.
  • Training and experience in education and supervision of resident doctors
Desirable criteria
  • Interest in medical management
  • Experience of new service delivery/change management
