Full-time Consultant Neurologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust with a special interest in movement disorders and deep brain stimulation (DBS).

The post will entail the delivery of neurology services in the region. The successful applicant will work within a team of Consultant Neurologists. This role with have subspeciality commitment in movement disorders, including the delivery of the Midlands DBS service.

Experience in this field is essential. The role will also including cover general and acute neurology and Nottingham University Hospital and Sherwood Forest Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to do a mix of general neurology clinic and subspecialty clinics. Booking criteria for general neurology clinics are per the ABN guidance with 30 minutes allocated for a new patient and 15 minutes for each follow up patient.

It is expected 5 patients are booked into each general neurology clinic and the rest of the clinic can be follow up slots. Each Clinic session is typically 4 hours. The number of clinics expected to be performed by the successful candidate is included in the job plan attached.

The post-holder will be responsible for the care of patients in his or her charge. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the delivery of teaching and training to students at Nottingham University Medical School, as well as to contribute to the teaching, training and supervision of Specialist Trainees in Neurology, who are in the East Midlands Deanery training programme.

As the regional Neurosciences centre, in additional to delivering tertiary specialist services in Neurology, the Neurology department at NUH must also contribute to the provision of a comprehensive Neurology service in the wider region of the East Midlands.

Accordingly, the successful candidate should expect to contribute to the provision of the neurology services at other hospitals in the region. This would be for the maximum of one day per week (or the equivalent), and in line with the expectations of existing members of the department.

Working for our organisation

Clinical Neurology forms part of the Nottingham Regional Neuroscience Unit and serves the population of Nottingham. It also provides an outreach neurological service to Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield. We continue to engage with other peripheral hospitals and support their neurology services as needed.

The Movement disorders service at NUH looking after the full range of movement disorders, and we work in partnership with our geriatrician colleagues. We offer the full range of advanced therapies for Parkinson’s disease (DBS, duodopa and produodopa) as well as multiple toxin injection clinics.

The DBS service has been running for 15 years covering the East Midlands, and expanded to cover the West midlands in 2021. We currently operate on 25 patients per year, but this post would allow expansion of this.

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Eligible to be included on the specialist register (or CCT expected within 6 months)
Desirable criteria
  • Further higher training or qualification MD or PhD

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent CCT/CESR or European Right to Work
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Professional Degree SCE

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Have trained in part or whole at a recognised neurology centre. In total four years training in neurology at SpR/ST level or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Development of subspecialty interest to compliment the dept

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidenced clinical skills as described in the job description
  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Specific Training in Communication Skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
