The post-holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team, embedded within the Brent CAMHS Learning Disability Pathway that delivers a high quality, evidence based and effective psychological care to individuals being treated under the team pathway.
The role includes the provision of specialist psychological assessment, therapy, advice and consultation on children and young people psychological care. The post holder will work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures.
The post-holder will utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service providing high level clinical leadership across the service, working closely with the team, families and multi-agency professionals to improve emotional and holistic well-being delivering highly innovative and adaptive evidence based psychological interventions.
The post-holder will develop opportunities to offer consultation to non-psychologist colleagues, professionals and carers within the young people’s network, working autonomously within professional guidelines . Working alongside services involved in the children and young people to coproduce creative activities and person centre care plan.

The responsibilities of this role are diverse and there are multiple levels to the work including:

  • Direct work with children, young people with learning disabilities and autism and their families/cares
  • Liaison and consultation work with a wide range of stakeholders, including special education school, 0-25 children with disabilities team, SENCO, SENDAS, and commissioners
  • Teaching and training
  • Providing clinical supervision
  • Working strategically with senior leads within the team and Trust to improve the quality of treatment and intervention given to the children and young people with learning disabilities and autism, and their families and carers

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. To act as care coordinator for a caseload of children and young people with learning disability and autism and significant mental health needs.
  2. To provide an efficient, effective, comprehensive and highly specialist assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with severe/profound learning disabilities and mental health problems, their carers/parents and families.
  3. To formulate and implement plans for formal clinical treatment and management of behaviours difficulties based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of these problems employing methods based upon evidence of proven efficacy within modality and with reference to appropriate clinical guidelines and care pathways (e.g. NICE, CEG).
  4. In liaison with colleagues and in response to an identified need, to provide specialist systemic psychological and clinical autonomy drawing on a range of models and wherever possible brief intervention. To practice in a way which is inclusive and considerate of the needs of each individual in the system including family members and their varying network.
  5. Regularly monitor and evaluate therapeutic interventions and progress using routine outcome measures and include family members as appropriate.
  6. To evaluate and make decisions about the treatment options considering both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical, environmental and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.

Person specification

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology (or its equivalent) as accredited by the British Psychological Society, or British Psychological Society Statement of Equivalence
  • Registration with HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist
Desirable criteria
  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice
  • Post-doctoral training in a relevant field

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist, including experience of working in a health care setting
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment (A&I) Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams (A&I) in physical health
  • Strong professional interest in the link between physical and mental health
  • Knowledge of specialized assessment and therapeutic approaches in learning disability
  • Experience of working with learning disability and autism and mental health Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with mental health and learning disability, autism and other neurodevelopmental disorder (inpatient/outpatient)
  • A knowledge of the mental health difficulties
  • Experience in the application of psychological approaches for different social and cultural groups
  • Experience in group work
  • Experience of supervising psychologists (including trainees) and having completed the relevant training.
  • Experience of providing teaching and training to psychologists and other professional groups.
  • Experience of working with, and addressing issues of, diversity including experience of working within a multicultural framework
  • Experience of proposing and Experience of liaison with other health professionals. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, relevant individuals from their wider systems, and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
  • Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of delivering psychological interventions to specific groups and communities (e.g. individuals who identify as BAME, NHS staff)
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team setting at a high level, hold leadership role and contribute to effective team functioning Well-developed IT skills including entry and analysis of research data and for teaching purposes
  • Ability to develop and use complex multimedia material for presentations in public, professional and academic meeting
  • A capacity to establish priorities and organise workload effectively and efficiently
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of leading specific projects within a clinical service
  • Experience of providing day to day management and support to junior psychologists
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical health psychology
