The post holder will work under the clinical direction of the consultants in the Haematology Department. The post would be ideal for those wishing to pursue a career in Haematology and to apply for a National Training Number. As such the post is suitable for any level of seniority from SHO equivalents to Clinical Fellows or Registrars and upwards who wish to pursue a career in Haematology and who would like to consolidate their experience.

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust provides a wide range of non-malignant and some malignant haematology services consistent with a busy district general hospital including a large population of patients with inherited haemoglobinopathies who require ambulatory and inpatient care.

Clinical duties within the Department will cover the whole range of haematological problems, with the post-holder providing consultative support to other inpatient services/GPs as well as diagnostic and laboratory support. Support to become proficient in bone marrow biopsy procedures will be provided.

The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice. The Department has a key awareness of the importance of clinical audit, and all specialist trainees are encouraged to complete audit projects whilst here.

Participation in undergraduate and CMT teaching is also encouraged.

Key duties / Responsibilities:
  • Care of haematology patients as delegated by the consultant.
  • If deemed competent, to carry out routine haematological procedures independently.
  • Learn to recognise and treat a range of clinical emergencies exclusive to patients with sickle cell.
  • The post holder will liaise with medical colleagues, nurses, therapists, social workers and other staff providing the range of services within the Trust.
  • Undertake undergraduate and post-graduate teaching.
  • The post holder must undertake, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
  • So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder must undertake to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.
  • The post holder will have the opportunity to partake in audits; QIP’s and contribute towards publications.
  • The post holder will have the opportunity to learn about pain management and sit in on specialist pain clinics.
  • Undertake regular resuscitation training and other mandatory training sessions.
  • The post holder will attend MDT meetings alongside the clinical lead.

The Clinical Structure of the Haematology department at the Homerton is funded for 4 WTE Consultants (General Haematology & Haemoglobinopathies), a training registrar post, one transfusion practitioner, 3 Haemoglobinopathy specialist Nurses and 2 Anti-coagulation Nurses.

The main focus of the clinical haematology service is the management of patients with sickle cell disease, general clinical haematology and anticoagulation. Full diagnostic facilities are available for patients with haematological malignancies but those patients requiring active treatment are referred to other units.
