Our Mental Health Liaison Team (MHLT) is an all-age mental health assessment service based in the Royal Stoke University Hospital, currently accredited by the Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network through the Royal College of Psychiatry.

The MHLT is an essential component of the urgent mental health care pathway for Stoke-on-Trent which provides a 24/7 - Core24 service, assessing people of all ages from all areas of the acute hospital trust. Our team comprises of dedicated, experienced multi-disciplinary professionals including psychiatrists, psychology, advanced nurse practitioners, physician associates, social workers, mental health nurses and administration staff.

We are looking to recruit a Band 5 Mental Health Practitioner at the Royal Stoke University Hospital. If you have experience working with severe and/or enduring mental health issues, people in mental health crisis and have an understanding/interest in gaining experience of how physical health issues can impact a person’s mental health, this role may be for you.

The post holder will be confident in the completion of face-to-face Holistic assessments, whilst working as a member of the multi-disciplinary team within the acute hospital in a fast-paced clinical environment on a shift basis over a 7-day, 24-hour period.

Newly qualified practitioners will be supported in their first year of practice via the preceptorship/ASYE programme.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for the delivery of care and for the supervision of non-registered staff who are carrying out all aspects of the caring process. The post-holder will assist in setting and maintaining standards of care, whilst maintaining effective integration with the multi-disciplinary team and assist with the facilitation of a collaborative approach to patient focussed care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  1. 1. Registered Nurses will administer and manage medicines according to policy and local protocol. To assess patient response and provide advice and education to junior staff and both patient and carers in respect of prescribed medicines
  2. 2. Provide support and guidance to junior or less experienced staff in the planning and delivery of care.
  3. 3. Maintain the therapeutic milieu, taking a proactive approach, supervising and supporting others in the same. Planning clinical activity in accordance with the needs of the service.
  4. 4. Taking prompt action on changes in condition, liaising with other members of the clinical (Multi-disciplinary) team when necessary, reviewing nursing care and communicating any amendments to the care delivery.
  5. 5. Develop skills in respect of specific interventions that are appropriate to the clinical area, act as a lead in developing nursing practice in relation to this.

  • A registered mental health practitioner with a degree in nursing, social work or occupational therapy or equivalent experience.
