Digital Health and Care Wales is an ambitious organisation created by Welsh Government to lead on the digital transformation of health and care. It builds on the digital architecture and national services put in place by the NHS Wales Informatics Service over the past decade.

The organisation will lead on large-scale developments that make a significant difference to the people of Wales as well as to health and care professionals, such as expansion of the digital patient record and the creation of a National Data Resource.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Developer to support the Digital Services for Patients and the Public (DSPP) programme to develop and support the next generation of health and care digital services in Wales, including the NHS Wales App.

The NHS Wales app will be a user-facing solution that will connect patients and the public to Welsh health and care services and be accessible to anyone living in Wales to proactively manage their health and access to trusted information on health, care and wellbeing services.

The DSPP programme will also develop the technology for suppliers and practitioners across health and care services in Wales to deploy digital services in a joined-up, safe and secure way, opening-up NHS Wales for future innovations in health and care digital services.

Members of the public will work with our team, alongside medical and care practitioners, to co-produce this technology and ensure the needs of our community are met.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Software Developer you will be responsible for:

  • Quality of the technical output of their team
  • Technical Design of Epics and Stories
  • Providing assistance during Work Package definition
  • Low level Estimates for Work Packages
  • Main Participant for technical activities during discovery
  • Story Preparation
  • Participation in code development
  • Coaching and Mentoring staff

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication and Relationship Skills:

  • Work closely with colleagues, customers, and senior staff through face-to-face communication to complete tasks.
  • Discuss progress and notify senior staff of impediments during regular team meetings like Daily SCRUMS.
  • Mentor junior colleagues, analyse their strengths and weaknesses, and provide guidance for skill development.

Analytical and Judgmental Skills:

  • Address technical weaknesses within the team through leading technical workshops and effective mentoring.
  • Analyse requirement specifications and assess their suitability before proceeding to software build stages.
  • Solve complex technical and business logic problems efficiently, providing elegant solutions.
  • Planning and Organizational Skills:
  • Plan and implement initiatives across the Application Development & Support Directorate, requiring high-level skill and experience.
  • Build and implement e-learning course profiles for technical training.
  • Develop test plans, assist with system maintenance, and keep technical skills up-to-date through training and seminars.

Responsibility for Policy/Service Development Implementation:

  • Identify and assist with continuous improvements in software development practices.
  • Implement improvements to development practices, such as continuous integration and code reviews.
  • Contribute to quality control records and ensure full patch and version control for software applications.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Master’s degree in an associated professional field (or equivalent qualification / experience).
  • Further evidence of relevant higher-level education and/or training e.g. Knowledge gained through practical experience of working at this level, across the range of work procedures and practices.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • Professional Registration: Registered IT Technician (RITTech)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience of working on digital products and services, in a similar role, with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proficient in software tools which automate or assist part of the development process.
  • Proficient in a set of codes and syntax (supported by software tools) that enables the unambiguous translation of specified functionality into source code for the creation of computer programs.
  • Proficient in methods and techniques for structured reviews, including reviews of technical work products, test plans, business cases, architectures and any other key deliverables.
