We are looking to recruit friendly, professional and motivated individuals with the ability to work as part of a team and who are willing to play a key role in our maternity workforce providing high quality care.
The Duchess of Kent Maternity Unit for Women & Newborn babies is situated in Northwest London and is part of the Hillingdon Hospital. We are a busy unit with currently around 4200 births each year, with plans to expand our maternity services and we would like to offer the right individuals the opportunity to join our team.
Our Maternity Support Workers are expected to undertake those duties for which Midwifery/Nurse training and registration are not required, under the direction of a Registered Midwife or Nurse. Successful candidates for the Maternity positions will be expected to work within the community setting, and may also be required to work a combination of day and night duties.
We offer a strong commitment to professional development. Our Practice Development team provides staff with a comprehensive package of training & clinical support and all our staff are released from clinical work to attend an annual mandatory training programme.
Main duties of the job
Clinical
To assist the registered midwife/ professional in the delivery of midwifery care.- To communicate with the woman/birthing person, in such a way, that respects and considers their level of understanding.
- To record all care/advice given on the Trust’s electronic patient recording system and where required complete paper documentation in line with Trust policy on record keeping.
- Support with infant feeding and actively encourage and support women/birthing people who choose to breastfeed their babies in line with the Trust policy and national initiatives.
- The post holder will achieve the necessary skills and knowledge through training, to carry out phlebotomy, neonatal screening, serum bilirubin and blood glucose monitoring procedures, basic wound care amongst others.
- To have a clear understanding of professionalism and boundaries when supporting women/birthing people in their home environment.

Shortlist criteria
Essential criteria- 5 GCSE’s or equivalent including English and Maths (A-C)
- NVQ/QCF Level 2 in Health and Social Care OR equivalent
- NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health and Social Care OR equivalent. Completed OR soon to complete.
- experience in a maternity unit/community or a hospital environment, which has utilised skills and knowledge that must be of benefit to the post e.g. vital signs and venepuncture.
- Experience working alongside a multi-disciplinary team.
