Sword is a leading provider of business technology solutions within the Energy, Public and Finance Sectors, driving transformational change within our clients. We use proven technology, specialist teams and domain expertise to build solid technical foundations across platforms, data, and business applications.

We have a passion for using technology to solve business problems, working in partnership with our clients to help in achieving their goals.

About the role:

As the Technical Author Assistant, you will play an important role in supporting the creation, formatting, and simplification of Business Operating Procedures for a major client in the energy sector. Working closely with procedure owners, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders, you will help ensure that all documentation is accurate, user-friendly, and aligned with company standards and governance frameworks.

You will assist in reviewing and reworking existing procedures, helping to simplify complex technical content and make it more accessible to a wider audience. You will also contribute to the development of supporting materials such as rollout communications and presentations, and ensure documents are consistently formatted and of high quality.

This role is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, organised, and keen to build a career in technical writing and business documentation, with opportunities to grow and develop within a supportive team environment.

As a Technical Author Assistant, you will:

  • Assist with formatting and updating existing Business Operating Procedures to meet templates and technical content standards.
  • Support the simplification and consolidation of technical procedures, making content user-friendly and easy to understand.
  • Help create supporting materials such as emails, PowerPoint slides, and visual aids to aid in the rollout of procedures.
  • Collaborate with procedure owners and subject matter experts to gather content and ensure accuracy.
  • Assist with quality checking and proofreading of documents to maintain high standards of technical writing and presentation.
  • Promote the use of Plain English and best practices in communication to ensure documents are accessible to all users.
  • Work within governance frameworks, helping to ensure all procedures align with required standards and guidelines.

Requirements

We’re open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds - whether you’re starting your career, returning to work, or looking to pivot into technical writing. If you meet some (but not all) of the criteria below, we still encourage you to apply:

  • An interest in technical writing, business procedures, or content creation.
  • Good attention to detail, with an eye for layout, formatting, and grammar.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A methodical and organised approach to managing documents and deadlines.
  • Ability to simplify technical content and make it clear and user-friendly.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively and engaging with different stakeholders.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint — familiarity with Excel and Visio is a bonus.
