How you'll make a difference:

As a Principal Project Manager, you will make a difference by working as part of an ambitious team and council, with a focus on growth and delivering improvements for residents and businesses and transformational change to transport in South Gloucestershire.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day project management of the development of business cases and delivering active travel and public transport infrastructure improvements.

South Gloucestershire has secured over £100m in funding to decarbonise transport and implement new infrastructure to promote public transport, walking and cycling and drive growth and productivity throughout the area.

What you will be doing:

  • You will undertake the project management and business case development for the delivery of transport infrastructure projects which support public transport, walking, cycling and create inclusive places.
  • Working closely with project partners, internal and external organisations you will achieve an ambitious work programme of major infrastructure improvements, collaborating with key stakeholders such as the Department for Transport, Network Rail, National Highways, the West of England Combined Authority and elected members.
  • You will manage multi-disciplinary project teams together with staff and contractors from other partner organisations, ensuring that members, officers, partners and other stakeholders are briefed in a timely way on project progress.
  • It will be your responsibility to effectively manage the project budget and programme, ensuring that resolution and effective management of any risks and issues.
  • You will present regular reports to the project sponsor and governance boards on project progress and major issues, ensuring that effective customer relationships are established and maintained and that the Council is aware of implications, risks and benefits and that innovative solutions to complex technical issues have been developed.

What we need from you:

  • You will be an experienced project manager with a strong track record of developing business cases for schemes and successful project delivery and have substantial operational and management experience.
  • It is essential that you hold a relevant professional qualification, degree or equivalent specialist qualification and have experience of working on projects, with knowledge of project management practices and systems such as APM or Prince 2
  • We require you to have significant matrix management experience with the ability to develop team members, ensuring they are valued and understand their contribution to the Council.
  • You will have a working knowledge of traffic management systems, understanding and experience of UK highway rules and regulations and also detailed technical knowledge of delivering infrastructure schemes to support public transport, walking, cycling and creating inclusive places.
  • Having experience of transport scheme design, business case development and producing funding bids, you will confidently understand the UK planning system and planning application processes and other statutory processes required for this role.
  • We require you to have experience of local government structures and processes, have experience of writing and presenting reports to governance boards and council members and working with key stakeholders and partners, such as Network Rail and National Highways.

  • This is a hybrid role meaning that you can work remotely or in South Gloucestershire Council offices.
