Roles and responsibilitiesAbility to take handover of daily duties from the midwife and use own judgement when prioritising care of neonate. Demonstrates insight that care is appropriate to the neonates assessed needs, context and culture. Ability to participate in the documentation of individualised neonatal care plan developed with the mother.
Demonstrates ability to recognise symptoms that may require discussion, intervention or referral, ie abnormal vital signs using NEWT, abnormal blood values. Has insight into importance of escalating any concerns in a timely manner to the midwife, neonatal team and wider MDT.
Demonstrates competency in examination of the Term baby, this includes checking the babys appearance, colour, breathing, behaviour, activity, posture and has passed urine and meconium within first 24 hours of life. Demonstrates the ability to provide basic care and hygiene needs of the neonate and provide appropriate parent education during hospital stay.
Ability to advise on how to position a baby in accordance with trust and Sudden Death prevention guidelines. Has knowledge of Principles of the Baby Friendly Initiative. Demonstrates understanding of the role skin to skin contact and ability to communicate is importance the mother in their care.
Demonstrates ability to support a mother to position her baby to the breast.Demonstrates techniques and understanding of the importance of hand expressing. Demonstrates sensitively in discussions about the importance of breast milk and breastfeeding on the health and wellbeing of mothers and babies.
Is confident in calculating neonates fluid intake. Demonstrates how to recognise and alleviate pain and stress in neonates utilising current evidence, whilst working within ones scope of practice. To ensure a secure environment with the maternity unit minimising risk to mothers and babies.
Understand and adhere to the procedures for dealing with complaints ensuring they are dealt with promptly and sympathetically. Awareness and ability to report incidents via electronic reporting system (Datix) and escalating incidents to midwife in charge of shift.
Demonstrates professionalism and efficiency in receiving and making telephone calls. Demonstrates professionalism and efficiency in handling confidential information in accordance with trust policies. Efficient and effective communicator with families, colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Demonstrates competency to take an active part of the daily neonatal ward round on the postnatal ward. Demonstrates ability to assist the midwife in completing admission and discharge documentation. Demonstrates competency in the correct use and maintenance of equipment frequently used in the care of the neonate.
Competent in checking neonatal emergency equipment in the ward area. To initiate appropriate resuscitation in an emergency situation and assist professionals in an emergency resuscitation. Have a responsibility to attend all mandatory training in practice and health and safety issues.

To actively participate in ward meetings and cascade information.
