Are you a Sonographer with a PGC or PGD in Medical Ultrasound (Overseas qualifications to a similar standard will be considered), and experience in Paediatric, Gynae and General Medical US? Then consider a move to the Ultrasound team at Manchester University Foundation NHS Trust.

Applications will be considered from qualified Sonographers with experience in general medicine and gynae scanning who would like to train in paediatrics and full training followed by a comprehensive preceptorship programme will be provided.

This post will be based mainly at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

The department has Siemens Sequoia US machines. We offer a high quality and specialised paediatric service particularly in gynae, abdominal, MSK, neck and scrotal ultrasound scans in a large teaching hospital setting.

Providing an efficient ultrasound service and welcoming atmosphere for patients, you'll be a vital member of a team of dedicated sonographers who work together to deliver the best possible service and patient care.

To succeed, you'll need proven ultrasound experience and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of patients and their carers. Flexibility in your approach to work is essential.

We are currently able to offer a Recruitment and Retention Premium after 12 months service.

Main duties of the job

Working autonomously as a member of a multidisciplinary team to provide a full ultrasound service within the Ultrasound Departments at Manchester Foundation Trust, the main base will be Royal Manchester Children's Hospital with cross site working being required if service demand dictates.

This role involves using complex ultrasound equipment to scan a wide selection of patients referred from many clinical areas, issuing a written report on the results, and discussing these when appropriate with both the patient and the referring clinicians.

Clinical expertise and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential requirements of the post. Discussing potentially distressing results with the patient is a requirement of the post, the sonographer must have the ability to impart bad news in a compassionate and understanding manner.

The department is committed to training and as a qualified Sonographer you would be expected to participate in student teaching and preceptorship programmes.

Person specification

Knowledge & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of General Medicine Ultrasound including abdominal, renal and gynaecology scanning.
  • Registration as a radiographer or midwife with the HCPC or NMC with evidence of CPD.
  • Minimum PG Certificate in General Medicine Ultrasound.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of further postgraduate studies an advantage.
  • Evidence of further relevant course attended.
  • Up to date CPD in Gynae Gen Medicine
  • Other specialist training in MSK and/or paediatrics

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completion of recognized course.
  • Practicing sonographer or midwife sonographer.
  • Experience in independent reporting.
  • Experience in transvaginal scanning
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate experience of working under pressure in an NHS environment.
  • Experience of working with trainees.
  • Evidence of CPD.
