Whipps Cross University Hospital is looking to recruit a Healthcare Support Worker (HCA) Band 3 who will work Faraday Ward at Whipps Cross Hospital. This post is open to individuals who are both experienced Healthcare Support Workers or those new to care.Individuals that are new to care will receive support to complete the Band 3 competencies and progress into a Band 3 role within six months upon successful completion of all required competencies.
We are looking for compassionate and motivated individuals who are passionate about delivering high-quality, person-centred care in a hospital setting. The role involves undertaking a range of delegated clinical tasks, such as:
- Patient observations (e.g., monitoring vital signs)
- Assisting with personal care and mobility
- Supporting patients’ nutritional and hydration needs
- Undertaking limited range of delegated duties (e.g. taking blood pressure, recording ECG, MRSA screening)
- Simple wound dressings
- Strong teamworking and communication skills are essential to ensure the comfort, wellbeing, and safety of our patients.

The postholder will work within the Faraday Ward is a 16 bedded acute respiratory ward that aim to provide high-quality care to our patients. We always work towards maintaining a high standard of care in accordance with the trust policies and Barts Health values.We encourage and foster an environment where patients, staff and visitors are welcome and treated with respect and dignity. Our approachable staff members make it a priority to establish good communication with patients, their families, and visitors to help continually improve on what we can offer as a unit.
The ward receives admission from various areas including A&E, AAU, and other wards. We also receive non-elective admissions from chest clinic and other hospitals under Barts Health Trust.
Most patients have complex needs due to their multiple active medical conditions. Hence, the needs and health of our patient’s family and primary carer’s can also have an impact on their successful discharge from the hospital. Faraday Ward has a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment and safe discharge of patients with regular multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss progress.Patients are not always discharged home but to further rehabilitation wards or to residential and nursing homes after functional assessment by the Integrated Discharge Team (IDT) to support our patient’s need. Referrals to Occupational Therapy are usually done from our daily handover or from other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Part of the Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist role is to look at patients’ needs and support. Occupational Therapy intervention includes full functional assessment of each patient to ensure their safe discharge from hospital following admission.
We work closely with the MDT to plan, organise, and facilitate patient discharges. It is vital for the team to maintain an open and transparent communication with our patients, regularly a Faraday Ward will always have a respiratory consultant through the week to lead daily clinical patient review supported by a group of junior doctors who specialize in respiratory conditions.
The nurses here are highly trained to carry out bedside respiratory care needed to support our patients recover from ill health, continuing health issues and to support patients and family even when they receive poor medical prognosis or diagnosis.
Our aim is to provide excellent care and meet the needs of patients and visitors. We welcome feedback so that we know what works and what improvements need to be made. Everything you tell us will be treated with strictest confidence and will not affect your continuing care.
Our team work collaboratively with other specialist teams to ensure our patients health issues are reviewed by the finest and always agree on an action plan with our patients at the centre of our care. Every shift will be covered by a nurse in charge to support all nursing team and to ensure patients and reassuring health care from our team assessing patient care needs and meeting their expectations.
Barts Health has a diverse and busy service that may require staff to be flexible in their working. The post holder will be required to work within a challenging clinical environment and may undertake shift work which may include nights and weekends.
