Deputy Pathology Support Manager

Department: Pathology - Blood Science (Pathology Support)

Full-Time, Band 6 £37,338 - £44,962 per annum

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

We are seeking someone to take a leading role in our Pathology Support Unit. You will support the Department Manager to ensure that the Pathology Reception area is functional interface between service users and the laboratory, assist in the development of a fully integrated pathology reception service, support the organisation and training of a team of dedicated Health Science Assistants and Phlebotomy staff, and the test referral processes performed by the team.

You will also support the Manager to ensure the service delivered is responsive to clinical requirements, operates within budgetary constraint and perform monitoring of all activity.

Main duties of the job

This role requires the holder to support the Manager for the Pathology Support Unit (PSU) including assistance in managing the staff and processes within it. The post holder will support the manager to make the pathology reception area a functional interface between the users and laboratory.

The post involves participation in and organisation of training and supervision of staff. The post holder will assist in the management of change in the ways that the sample reception service is provided to improve that service, including creating a single cohesive unit.

PSU also manages the referral process of all Blood Science specimens requiring specialised analysis, assists in monitoring reference supplier performance and management of the receipt of those results facilitating post analytical activity for referred investigations.

PSU is also responsible for the pathology facilitated phlebotomy service to Acute Trust clinical locations.

The Pathology Deputy Support Manager is not responsible for delivery of this service but will act under direction of the manager to ensure it is responsive to clinical requirements within budgetary constraints; monitor phlebotomy activity and staff performance; assist in the production of reports providing assurance of service delivery and that lead to service improvement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Provide professional advice and expertise within the scope of service of the Pathology Support Unit.
  • Take a leading role (but not be responsible for) in the education and training of staff; ensuring all staff are both trained and competent for the tasks they are required to perform.
  • Take a leading role (but not be responsible for) in the maintenance/monitoring of relevant statutory and Trust Health & Safety requirements. Implement further measures as required to enhance and improve the working environment in the department.
  • Take a leading role (but not be responsible for) in the maintenance and development of IT systems required for delivery of the Pathology Support Unit.

Essential criteria
  • Educated to A, AS or NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) and certified.
  • IBMS Certificate of Achievement (or equivalent).
  • Fire Safety, Health & Safety (statutory requirements), Infection Prevention & control, Information Governance (including GDPR), Safeguarding Adults & Children, Equality and Diversity.
  • ISO 15189 Standards for Medical Laboratories.
  • IBMS Standards & Codes of Practice.
  • Phlebotomy Process.
  • Microsoft Office applications.
  • Laboratory Information Systems, Quality Management systems/tools and NPEX.
  • NHS EPR, ESR & Risk/Incident Management Systems.

  • Management Qualification.

  • Experience of a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science activities acquired through training to degree or equivalent level of knowledge

  • Line Management including team leading, absence management, Annual Joint Review & PDRs, staff rostering.
