Support Medical Secretary - Band 3

Part-time 22.5 hours per week

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, flexible and well organised individual to join our friendly Gynaecology team as Support Medical Secretary.

The successful applicant will require previous Medical Secretary experience in a healthcare environment and have excellent organisational and communication skills. You will be able to cope well under pressure and have a good understanding of the patient pathway.

You should enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team and be confident liaising with patients, medical staff, general practitioners and referring hospitals.

The post holder will be expected to organise their workload and duties accordingly, in such a way to make a direct and positive contribution to the service, exercising initiative and maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role will be to provide support to the Senior Medical Secretaries within the department. Day to day responsibilities will include the typing of clinical correspondence, investigations etc. You will also assist colleagues during in times of leave/sickness.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • To provide a full medical secretarial and administrative support.
  • General office duties including e-mail and computer systems, word processing.
  • Assist the OBM/DOBM to facilitate the smooth running of the Gynaecology services.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE ‘O’ Level or equivalent – including English Language
  • RSA II typewriting or equivalent
  • ICT Qualification or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Medical Secretary AMSPAR or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a busy office and dealing with conflicting demands
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as a medical secretary in a health care setting

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good organizational skills, ability to prioritise
  • Excellent communication and good interpersonal skills
  • Confident in the use of computer packages such as Word and ability to learn new skills
  • Audio typing skills
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to use LE2.2
  • Ability to use Speech Report
  • Ability to use EPR

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to and understanding of confidentiality
  • Knowledge of software packages, Word, Excel
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology
