We are looking for people to regulate large process industry, developing and applying their technical knowledge to work with others in achieving our aims. You will assess and enforce environmental permit compliance, ensuring regulated sites are preventing pollution and optimising their use of resources, and will use a range of regulatory and enforcement tools during site visits and desk-based work to secure best practice and environmental outcomes.

Your job will place you directly in the frontline of regulating industry in support of this agenda.

You will also need to be comfortable with a changing work environment as we continue to digitally transform the way we work, making our business more efficient and improving our customer service.

Technical skills relevant to process industry are strongly desirable; effective influencing and negotiating skills are essential as you will deal with people at senior levels within industry, local communities, partner organisations and others.

Experience of preparing for and responding to incidents is desirable. We work with emergency responders and other professional partners to prepare and respond to a wide range of environmental incidents including pollution incidents, flooding, drought and animal disease outbreaks.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

The team

The posts sit within the North East Area’s Regulated Industry department and can be based at our offices either in Darlington or Newcastle, covering the Tees Valley, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham areas.

We regulate a wide range of industry under Environmental Permitting Regulations including the Chemicals, Incineration, Combustion, Metals, Paper & Pulp, Hazardous Waste and Food & Drink sectors, working with a broad range of people at all levels to achieve results.

Experience/skills required

You will be able to demonstrate both your technical knowledge and potential to regulate large process industry, making proportionate and risk-based decisions to secure compliance with legislation, whilst at the same time meeting our duty to support economic growth.
Experience of environmental regulation is desirable, you’ll need personal resilience to tackle complex technical problems and sometimes deal with contentious issues that attract significant public interest. You will have strong scientific, engineering or technical knowledge and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

You will also need excellent team working skills, collaboration daily is essential.

You will be able to confidently and quickly deal with complex and fast changing situations, adopting a pragmatic approach to achieve the best outcomes for the environment. You will have a degree or equivalent or relevant experience in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline, and possibly be a member of a relevant professional organisation.
