Railway Engineering Technician Apprenticeship - Level 3

Location: Wessex

This apprenticeship is tailored for individuals already qualified in the rail industry who aspire to develop their skills further. As part of this programme, you'll gain:

  • Level 3 Certificate as a Railway Technician
  • Comprehensive rail training, including:
  • DCCR (DC Conductor Rail)
  • OLEC 1 (Overhead Line Construction Competences)
  • Training on a variety of small tools
  • MC (Machine Controller)
  • CC (Crane Controller)
  • COSS (Controller of Site Safety)

Main Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the construction, installation, renewal, enhancement, and modification of railway infrastructure
  • Support fault finding and diagnosis to prevent or resolve equipment failures
  • Maintain and replace components as necessary
  • Participate in functional and operational testing and inspection using specialised equipment
  • Carry out vegetation clearance
  • Operate tools such as picks, spades, pneumatic drills, and specialised equipment for securing rails

Working Hours: Due to safety considerations, work will primarily occur during off-peak hours, typically nights and weekends. This role is not a standard 9-5 job; expect an average working week of 45 hours.

What We're Looking For:

  • Open to candidates aged 18 and over
  • Willingness to work varied shifts outdoors in all weather conditions, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays
  • Commitment to a 24-36-month programme
  • Ability to travel and occasionally stay away from home (accommodation provided)
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team
  • A proactive, self-disciplined attitude towards learning
  • Understanding of the importance of following safety-critical instructions, policies, and procedures
  • Due to varied work locations, a valid driving license and access to a vehicle are required
