Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Medical Psychotherapist / Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Wandsworth Complex Needs Service based at Trinity Building, Springfield Hospital SW17. The role is being offered as 5PAs on a substantive basis.

Our Trustwide community services have undergone an exciting and innovative transformation which has included a strengthening of our clinical pathways for patients with personality disorders and a Trustwide Clinical lead for Personality disorders.

We are looking for consultants with the interest and skills in providing strong medical leadership to take our services forward.

Main duties of the job

This medical psychotherapy role in Wandsworth CNS is multifaceted, with a significant emphasis on supporting the delivery of mandatory psychotherapy training for psychiatric trainees at South West London and St George’s Trust through the supervision of core and higher trainees and trainees completing CCTs in medical psychotherapy.

This includes conducting face to face assessments of patients for their suitability for trainees to deliver psychodynamic psychotherapy under supervision.

This post-holder will work closely with the Team Manager, and another part time consultant who is acting as the clinical lead for the team, to provide medical leadership. They will also contribute clinical expertise to Wandsworth CNS in delivering Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) as core treatment offers, enhancing the overall therapeutic approach and ensuring comprehensive patient care.

This combination of supervisory, evaluative, and clinical responsibilities makes the role both challenging and rewarding, fostering professional growth and patient well-being.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

If you are a dynamic and established consultant medical psychotherapist/psychiatrist fully registered with the GMC as well as holding S12 approval under the Mental Health Act or are a high trainee within nine months of being eligible for this grade, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Our Trust services have been transforming and integrating as part of the country wide community mental health NHS transformation programme. In Wandsworth the Trust is also involved in the Ethnicity and Mental Health Improvement Project (EMHIP); a collaborative project involving SWLSTG Trust, South West London Integrated Care System and networks of BME voluntary, faith and community groups, convened by the Wandsworth Community Empowerment Network (WCEN).

It’s aim is to reduce ethnic inequalities in access, experience and outcomes of mental health care.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical degree.
  • Full GMC registration
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or eligible for such inclusion on Specialist Registrar (that is within three months of completing their CCT.)
  • Approved Clinician Status
  • Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act or eligible and willing to apply for such approval once in post.
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych, or equivalent
  • CCT in Medical Psychotherapy
  • MBT or DBT practitioner accreditation
  • MBT or DBT supervisor accreditation
  • Qualification in supervising intensive individual analytic psychotherapy
  • Additional BPC or UKCP accreditation

KNOWLEDGE: & EXPERIENCE:

Essential criteria
  • A detailed knowledge of main psychotherapies indicated for personality disorder as well as the role of pharmacological interventions.
  • Expert knowledge and experience of psychotherapy
  • Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of the CPA process, risk assessment and risk management
  • Experience of supervising and treating patients in intensive psychotherapy
  • Experience of Supervision of Higher Trainees psychotherapy cases

AUDIT AND MANAGEMENT:

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit and/or research
  • Commitment to working with allied agencies including carer’s groups, and local charities.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of service planning and development
  • Experience of working with third sector partners

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS:

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in audit or research
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree in research
  • Completion of a research project and evidence of it’s dissemination
  • Publication in a peer reviewed journal

TEACHING

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching Qualification
  • Evidence of feedback good from students
