Medical Engineering Apprentice

During the apprenticeship the apprentice will gain and apply the following skills/knowledge:
  • To train to undertake safety testing, routine maintenance and minor repairs on medical equipment
  • To plan workload and prioritise tasks under supervision, upholding working standards, policies, procedures and objectives in order to maintain standards and service delivery
  • Use computer skills to operate the asset management system (OPTIM), in order to record activity and equipment details ensuring that the information is accurate for both customer and managerial needs
  • Maintain safety in the use and maintenance of medical equipment, by ensuring all equipment delivered into the department is correctly decontaminated, labelled and cleaned prior to acceptance
  • Diagnose and carry out medical equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Be conversant with various aspects of Planned Preventative Maintenance regimes.
Use all relevant tools and equipment.
Understand fully the inter-relationship between various systems linked to equipment
  • Actively participate in the operation of the medical engineering management system including completion of all paperwork required of the scheme (including completion of all job information and time sheets)
  • Obligation to undertake training where necessary to learn new techniques, specifically in relation to specialised testing and maintenance routines
  • Possess the ability to communicate and liaise with all levels of staff on possible technical matters regarding essential equipment maintenance
  • Liaise with ward/department Managers to arrange access for all equipment repair and maintenance
