We have an exciting opportunity to join the Fire Safety Team within University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, in the position of Fire Safety Advisor, based at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. The post is fulltime, 37.5 hours per week.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with significant experience of Fire Protection/Prevention.

The Fire Safety Team provides a range of specialist advice and assistance to a wide range of staff, senior managers and Trust Directors and experience of fire risk assessments in complex settings is essential together with relevant fire safety qualifications.

You will require experience of producing and delivering training, supported by a relevant training qualification.

You will be required to provide specialist support to the Trust on all aspects of fire safety, providing support for implementing the Trusts Fire Safety Policy.

Knowledge of relevant Building Control Guidance documents and current fire safety legislation is essential. You should have significant experience of fire safety awareness and any legislative requirements.

Main duties of the job
  • To be a member of the Fire Safety Team for the trust
  • Maintain and deliver Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and ensure Trust compliance with all statutory legislation and regulations concerning Fire
  • To ensure that the Estates operational teams are compliant with Trust policies and procedures and that these documents are up to date
  • Carry out assurance audits within the Trust to ensure compliance
  • Support the Fire Safety Manager with expertise on fire matters
  • Compile and regularly review all risks appertaining to the fire system infrastructure, leading to the delivery of safe practice and measures to minimise the impact of risks
  • Providing expert advice on fire legislation. Providing expert technical advice on the application and interpretation of fire safety guidance, including DoH’s Firecode as identified in HTM 05-01

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Support the Fire safety Manager in actively managing the assurance of the Trust Fire Safety Policy, ensuring the required compliance and quality is achieved, within budget to include controls, assurance, planning and forecasting expenditure where required.
  • Be a positive role model and actively promote the Trust’s vision and strategic aims, and values.
  • Work with members of the Trust and key stakeholders to develop and maintain a positive reputation for efficiency and operational responsiveness.
  • Support the Fire Safety Manager in the development of the Estates Department ensuring co-ordinated and integrated solutions that are efficient, cost effective, and that future proofs the hospital.

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Demonstrable experience in fire safety.
  • • Demonstrable experience of preparing & delivering training courses.
Desirable criteria
  • • Proven knowledge and demonstrable experience in the application of Firecode.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Science- or engineering-based education or equivalent; or extensive demonstrable experience of fire safety.
  • • Certificate in Training Practice or equivalent or extensive demonstrable experience of preparing and delivering training. Membership of a professional organisation (e.g., the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE); the Institute of Fire Prevention Officers (IFPO)).
Desirable criteria
  • • Fire engineering/ fire safety degree or other relevant academic qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience

  • • Highly developed & effective negotiating/ influencing skills & ability to develop & maintain constructive relationships with professional & managerial disciplines. • Highly developed & effective verbal & written communication skills.
