Main duties of the job

The Respiratory Physiology Department at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) are delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Respiratory Physiologist to join our expanding department. We are looking for a enthusiastic and motivated individual to work at both the Royal South Hants Hospital covering our new Community Diagnostic Centre, and at Southampton General Hospital.

We are looking to recruit an experienced Band 5 Respiratory Physiologist who is currently undergoing or has completed the ARTP Part 3.
Please note if you do not meet all of the essential criteria then you could be appointed as a trainee whereby you will complete an internal work-based training programme. The will include but not be limited to; in-house training (both theoretical and practical), competencies and relevant external courses and accreditations fulfilling all the essential criteria thus resulting in becoming a Band 5 Respiratory Physiologist.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Our department is able to provide a wide array of tests such as FeNO, Impulse Oscillometry, Spirometry, Gas Transfer, Body Plethysmography, MIPS/MEPS/SNIP, postural Spirometry etc along with complex tests such as Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (athletes, CF, Pulmonary Hypertension etc) and Bronchial Provocation Challenge Testing.

We test inpatients and outpatients and research participants on a daily basis meaning being proactive and excellent team working and communication is critical.

You will need to work flexibly across sites, be proactive and enjoy working in a fast paced Respiratory Physiology Outpatient Department. The right candidate for this opportunity will be punctual, professional, able to build rapport with both staff and patients.

Being able to coach patients whilst having a keen eye for detail and accuracy within time constraints is essential.

We work Monday to Friday with core hours of 08:30-16:30.

Ability to travel between sites is key.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • BSc in clinical physiology or equivalent with relevant experience within respiratory physiology sciences.
  • ARTP Professional Examination (Level 3) or willing to work towards it
  • Currently working within a Respiratory Physiology Department
  • Able to undertake complex hand-eye coordination tasks and have the dexterity to use specialist diagnostic equipment.
  • Able to relate information in a variety of forms to patients, relatives and carers
  • Eligible for or already registered with RCCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS experience
  • Previously worked with the public
  • Computer data entry
