About the role

We have a fantastic opportunity for an Accounting Assistant Apprentice at our purpose-built factory at Royal Portbury Dock, where we manufacturer approx. 36,000 tons of dry powder blends for several well-known brands.

Working alongside the Plant Controller and accounts team the apprentice will learn all aspects of a busy finance function, including; financial reporting, invoicing, costing, and office administration. The principal role is to provide weekly and monthly KPI reporting to the site, to support financial reporting into the Site Financial Controller.

What will I be doing?
 •  Tracking and reporting of process losses, proactively working with plant production and site operations teams to identify, understand resolve any differences
 •  Preparation of weekly KPI reports for the Site, proactively learning and linking in with the site operations team to understand key KPI’s
 •  Supporting Plant Controller to help understand weekly cost estimates with a potential to investigate any key variances with the functional budget holders
 •  Analysing some key general ledger accounts for areas of overspend and potential savings
 •  Supporting the preparation of weekly Maintenance repairs spend
 •  Support the Plant Financial Controller in month end reporting duties adhering to required deadlines
 •  Supporting Indirect Procurement in raising any necessary Purchase Orders
 •  General Administrative activities to support the site team
 •  Cross team cover of duties
 •  Ad hoc projects/ reporting

What Qualifications and skills do I need to apply?
 •  GCSE or equivalent A minimum of 5 subjects including English & Maths (Grade 9-5 / A*-C)

What Training will I receive?
 •  You will undertake the “Assistant Accountant” Apprenticeship (an Advanced Apprenticeship in Accounting), with full support from Accountancy Learning (Our Training Provider) as part of their Flexible Apprenticeship Programme

Assessment will be by an “End Point Assessment” and will be graded “Pass” or “Distinction”. This will include two elements:

 •  A Professional Discussion. This will include a series of questions allowing you to to display the knowledge and experience you have obtained over your apprenticeship
 •  You will build a Portfolio of reflections and product evidence that will be used for discussion points in the PD
 •  A Synoptic Exam. This will include elements you have learnt throughout your studies of the individual AAT Units and this will contribute towards your end grade
 •  You will be prepared for both of these elements by undertaking studies for the AAT (Level 3) Advanced Diploma in Accounting. This will underpin both elements of your “end point assessment”. It is anticipated that your apprenticeship duration will be for 15-18 months. (Those with no prior accounting knowledge might be required to first complete their Level 2 Accounts/Finance Assistant Apprenticeship)
 •  You will receive support from both the employer, and the training provider, to complete and achieve your Apprenticeship and will be given time to study during the week on a day release basis. As you are working towards a professional qualification
 •  As you learn more in both the office and in your studies your responsibilities, and the variety of tasks you undertake, are expected to increase
 •  Those with previous relevant qualifications and experience may be considered for a Higher Apprenticeship undertaking the Professional Accounting Technician Standard
