Personal Assistant
Cornwall Council Together for Families | St Austell | findajob.dwp.gov.uk |
Personal assistants are required to provide 2:1 support to a happy and energetic 6-year-old boy who lives in St Austell. This support would allow him to engage in activities in the community and build relationships outside of his school and home life.
The right candidates must have knowledge or personal experience in supporting individuals with special needs as the young boy has complex intellectual needs. He is non-verbal with significant learning disabilities, severe autism, sensory processing difficulties, ADHD, and high levels of anxiety.
Personal care is required as he is incontinent and needs support in all aspects of day-to-day living.
He is entirely non-verbal with very little understanding of the world around him, and the right candidates must be open to learning how to maintain a total communication approach consisting of electronic communication devices, picture exchange systems, and behavioural traffic light approaches to build his understanding and confidence around communication.
He adores water and enjoys time at the beach. He also enjoys running freely in empty secure fields – we often rent dog-walking fields to allow him to explore the outdoors safely. He also likes routine visits to feed the ducks, swimming sessions, and visits to small gated parks, although he does struggle when peers are present which is difficult in more congested times.
He also enjoys soft play, trampoline parks and theme parks, on quieter days and when the noise and visual levels are low. He thrives on routine and would benefit from regular and scheduled outings that are predictable enough for him to anticipate.
He requires adults who are patient and understanding of his behaviours. He can exhibit high levels of challenging behaviours, especially when emotionally overwhelmed or anxious, and this requires strong candidates who can keep him and themselves safe – protective wear may be necessary.
Candidates must be willing to support him wearing body reins and must be able to keep him safe and support him into his specialist pushchair which may require heavy lifting/moving and handling. He has no sense of danger and requires adults to consistently risk-assess environments to prevent eloping as he can be extremely fast and unpredictable.
Rate of pay of £12.00
Working predominately two evenings per week (term time) and one day on the weekend. School holiday availability will be required. A driving licence is essential for this role.
The successful applicants will be employed under a private arrangement with the family. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
All offers of employment will be subject to the successful candidates undertaking an enhanced DBS check; this administration process will be undertaken by Cornwall Council.
If you would like to apply for this role, please send your CV. Alternatively, you can request an application form.
