We are currently in an exciting period of expansion and devel-opment for Child Health services in East Kent Hospitals. Our most recent CQC inspection rated us GOOD for SAFE and WELL-LED and we are striving to achieve excellence with our consultant workforce increasing to ensure outstanding care for the local population and meet the RCPCH Facing the Future recommendations.
Applications are invited for a Consultant Paediatrician post, attracting 10PA’s, at the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mary Hospital at Margate. Opportunities are available for de-velopment of sub-specialty interests.
We aim for every consultant to excel in both clinical and non-clinical endeavours, including clinical leadership, research, teaching and other allied areas, supported by innovative development programs provided within the trust.
We offer removal expenses, up to 32 days’ annual leave and active support for study, quality improvement and patient safety work as part of our ‘We care’ improvement journey, and medical education and research.
Appointees will be responsible for care of children admitted to the general paediatric ward (Rainbow). Duties will include cover for the Level 1 special care baby unit (SCBU), participating in: the Emergency pathway (EP) with overnight on call (9pm till 8:30am), consultant of the week (COW), to cover of care in inpatient ward, children assessment unit and ED), consultant of the week for the Neonatal services (SCBU, Labour ward, Postnatal ward and Transitional care) and general outpatient activities.
This will achieve our strategic aim of improving support to the neonatal services as well as the acute care and emergency pathway. There is an opportunity to develop a specialist interest to complement due to growing demand and replace those affected due to retirement.
Child Health Services in East Kent are clinically led, with evidence-based medicine and the best outcomes for the child at the heart of every decision. Candidates must lead and support multi-professional teams, so that we can take children’s medicine into the future with confidence.

Travel from the base site would be included in this case.
The expansion in consultant numbers is an exciting development allowing changes in service provision (Monday to Friday) for the emergency pathway. The aim is for an onsite consultant paediatrician to support patient flow in the general paediatric unit, the children’s assessment unit and paediatric pathway via the Emergency Department (ED - with full support of ED staff) including the paediatric resuscitation bay.
Standard operating procedures for these roles will provide guidance as to what is expected of the postholder to fulfil the service needs.
A strong commitment from the appointee to the Child Health Care Group will be expected with involvement in activities such as audit, appraisal, clinical governance, teaching and training and development of guidelines.
