Academic Training Programme Director - OUCAGS | NHS England

Oxford | findajob.dwp.gov.uk |
Oxford University Clinical Academic Graduate School (OUCAGS) is also the Academic School of NHS England Thames Valley (NHSE-TV, or the ‘Oxford Deanery’). It was established in 2009 as a partnership between Oxford University, Oxford Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education (PGMDE) Deanery, NHS Education South Central and the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust to integrate clinical and academic training on the new Integrated Academic Training pathway that was emerging.
Since this time, many clinical academic doctors have benefitted from the integrated approach taken in Oxford and the Thames Valley training programmes despite the considerable changes to the organisations involved.

Summary of Role

The Academic Training Programme Director (ATPD) post offers an important, varied and rewarding role within OUCAGS (www.oucags.ox.ac.uk) and is vital in helping to select, support, develop and mentor academic trainees

We anticipate appointing two individuals to join our existing team. Each individual would work an average of 0.5 EMC (2hrs) weekly.

Applications are particularly encouraged from those in craft specialties and those with an interest in community medicine.

Each ATPD will act as a named mentor to Academic Clinical Fellows (ACFs) and Clinical Lecturers (CLs) from a number of specialties and the ATPD will work with at least one of the following specialties / specialty groups depending on expertise and preference:
 •  General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology;
 •  General Practice, Public Health, and smaller specialties who may have ACF/CLs in the future;
 •  Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, and Intensive Care Medicine;
 •  Haematology, Immunology and Histopathology;
 •  Internal Medical Training (IMT);
 •  Medical and other higher specialty training programmes such as Cardiology, Dermatology, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Clinical & Medical Oncology, Neurology and Respiratory Medicine

In April 2023, NHS England, NHS Digital, and Health Education England merged to create a new, single organisation to lead the NHS in England. This new NHS England is designed to create a simpler, smaller, high performing, organisation that leads the NHS more effectively and is a better place to work.
Speaking with one voice to the service.

The new NHS England board have set out the top-level purpose for the new organisation to lead the NHS in England to deliver high-quality services for all, which will inform the detailed design work and we will achieve this purpose by:
 •  Enabling local systems and providers to improve the health of their people and patients and reduce health inequalities.
 •  Making the NHS a great place to work, where our people can make a difference and achieve their potential.
 •  Working collaboratively to ensure our healthcare workforce has the right knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to deliver accessible, compassionate care
 •  Optimising the use of digital technology, research, and innovation
 •  Delivering value for money.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

The post-holders will work closely with, and be accountable to, the Head of School, Deputy Head of School and Postgraduate Dean. As for all NHSE-TV officers, the post holder will be required to adhere to the processes under which NHSE-TV operates and fulfil NHSE-TV requirements.
OUCAGS has a small administrative team which supports the School and the ATPD activities.

Appraisal and reappointment

The post holder will have an annual appraisal with the Head of School. The appointment will be for a period of 3 years in the first instance, with the possibility of a 2-year extension before re-application.

Training will be offered in aspects of the role with which the appointee is not familiar.
