Mechanical Design Engineer - St Neots - Motorsport

We’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join one of our prestigious Automotive & Motorsport clients.

This role involves working on automotive projects at the cutting edge of steering system development, supporting the most dynamic vehicle manufacturers bring exciting vehicles to market, focussing on electric and autonomous vehicles.

Our client is currently expanding the engineering team due to high levels of demand and are looking for dynamic people who can help drive forward and deliver interesting and challenging projects. Being forward- thinking, imaginative and determined, you will help ensure customer expectations are exceeded, anticipating and overcoming any difficulties to deliver class-leading solutions on time and to budget.

Within this role you will be involved in projects from concept through into production and you will see vehicles on the road using the systems you have helped develop. It would suit an experienced project engineer or a design engineer who is looking to take on additional responsibilities and play a major role in the success of both the projects they are involved with and the company as a whole.
Combining hands-on design engineering with having real responsibility and authority, this is a high-profile role where the impact you make will be visible to all.

Activities: Lead and contribute to design engineering activities
 •  Decide on the best approach to achieve the technical requirements and cost, weight and quality targets
 •  Lead DFMEA and Design for Manufacture activities
 •  Define and manage design validation activities
 •  Use appropriate CAE tools in an analysis led design approach
 •  Create and develop 3D models and review those created by other members of the team
 •  Create and develop 2D manufacturing drawings and review those created by other members of the team
 •  Liaise with Production, Quality and Shipping to ensure all technical and deliverable requirements are being fulfilled

Take responsibility for delivering the project:

 •  Manage risks within the project
 •  Take pre-emptive action to mitigate risks and lead action to quickly and effectively resolve any issues that do arise
 •  Maintain visibility of key deliverables and ensure everyone is working towards their achievement
 •  Technical liaison with suppliers in support of Purchasing
 •  Take responsibility for positive communication
 •  Establish and maintain a cadence of reporting progress and issues to the customer
 •  Establish and maintain excellent communication with stakeholders within the business
 •  Support the effective running and development of the company
 •  Ensure the health and safety of all activities within your areas of responsibility
 •  Maintain and support compliance with ISO9001, ISO14001 and TS16949 procedures
 •  Provide positive support to all areas of the business as may be required from time to

Person Specification:

 •  Minimum 3 years’ experience in automotive design and development
 •  Dynamic, assertive without being aggressive, and highly capable
 •  Strong engineering skills and knowledge in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronic design
 •  Excellent organisational skills, motivated and self-disciplined with a strong eye for detail
 •  Good communication skills, both written and verbal along with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build respect and loyalty within a team, with customers and within the business
 •  Previous experience of a project engineer role is an advantage
 •  Previous experience in an automotive supplier or engineering service provider is an advantage
 •  An understanding of project processes, in particular risk management, change control and real-world problem solving is essential
 •  Must have a degree in Engineering or be able to prove equivalent level of engineering knowledge
 •  Strong IT skills including but not restricted to: MS Office package, MS Project and Excel in particular
 •  Proactive ‘can do’ attitude and a determination to demonstrate and deliver excellence

Software Knowledge/Experience

3D CAD - Autodesk Inventor beneficial

MS Office Suite: Word, PowerPoint, Excel

FEA – NASTRAN/Ansys beneficial
CFD – Titan use Simerics but exposure to other CFD packages still beneficial

Standards

Experience of working within an ISO9001 / TS 16949 environment

BS8888 drawing standards

UNECE Reg 79 familiarity an advantage

SO26262 exposure an advantage
