Applications are invited for six part time posts based at the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital, which has honorary status with University College London. The Luton & Dunstable Hospital is part of the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
It is a 660 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000.

This post is fixed term of 12 months only, in line with the available funding for the educational element. This will not be extended beyond this period.

This appointment will be made in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England) 2002.

The post holder is responsible for developing and supporting education and training of all University College London Medical School final year trainees and will be accountable to and report to the Undergraduate Director. The post also entails liaison with the undergraduate teaching faculty at UCL and attendance at study days.

Duties and Responsibilities:
 •  Assist the final year team to integrate, assess and deliver the final year curriculum
 •  Assist in organisation and delivering of Mock and Final assessments
 •  Contribute to the departmental teaching programme at undergraduate level and to the department’s research, public engagement and education consultancy and outreach programmes and/or other activities.
 •  Assist the Lead for Undergraduate Education in delivery of education to UCL final year medical students. This also includes the development and delivery of mock OSCES and final MBBS examinations held on site.
 •  Assist the Undergraduate Programme Directors in delivering education and training to medical students, which includes assistance, design and development of the educational programme, careers support and simulation training.
 •  Assist in training the trainers in the Trust.
 •  Deal directly with routine enquiries and ensure that messages and/or in-depth requests are notified to the appropriate member of the team.
 •  Act as faculty member for weekly simulation sessions for final year medical students
 •  Responsible for patient recruitment and keep the patient lead-ins up to date

Work with the SIM Tutor to maintain consumables in the Multi Skills Laboratory and Simulation Suite
 •  It is expected that the postholder will be flexible, professional and cooperative with the evolving needs of COMET

These posts are for Clinical Teaching Fellows (CT1-2 equivalent) having completed their Foundation training or equivalent. The posts are based at the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital, which has honorary status at University College London.

The post holder is responsible for developing and supporting education and training of all University College London Medical School final year trainees on placement at the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital. The postholder will be accountable to and report to the Undergraduate Directors.

For candidates wishing to maintain their clinical skills it will be possible to incorporate a clinical component into the role. The postholder will continue to develop their clinical skills in line with their career path. Clinical experience in medicine at an appropriate grade for the appointee will be available from a wide range of specialties across the hospital.
It is expected that the postholder will work clinical shifts equivalent to at least one session per week over the course of the year. These sessions/shifts will attract locum payment, i.e. additional payment at the specialty rate.

Hours of Work: Basic hours of work are 8-4, 24 hours on average per week (Bespoke timetable subject to study days and compulsory attendance on Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Objectives of the Post:
 •  Support will be offered for the completion and submission of at least one piece of educational research for publication
 •  Creation and delivery of teaching resources to support medical training
 •  Supervision and support of junior doctor led teaching of undergraduates at the Trust
 •  Developing a wide ranging educational portfolio to lead to Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Bursary funding is available for a PG Certificate in Medical Education up to maximum of £3,000 with one of the universities in the East of England region. Please be aware any shortfall in costs will need to be met by the postholder
 •  Develop teaching material and enhanced learning within the Multi Skills Laboratory

Qualifications & Experience:

Appointees will have a basic medical degree as recognised by the GMC and will have completed their Foundation training (or equivalent). Appointees are required to comply with the standards set by the General Medical/Dental Council. A breach of such standards may lead to action by the Trust independent of any action taken by the GMC/GDC.
Any breach would be investigated fairly and appropriate steps taken to prevent a recurrence and address any wider causes.

Personal Commitment to Continuing Education & Training:

The post holder will be expected to be committed to continuing professional education and to undertake other specific training courses as necessary within and outside the post. You will be responsible for your own learning by making full use of the tutorial system, i.e. library resources, and access to academic staff and consultants teaching and to attend as directed for training and in-service commitments.

Main Conditions of Services:

The appointment will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and the General Council Conditions of Service as amended from time to time by local agreements.

These are part time posts to coordinate with the relevant clinical training career pathway of the successful candidate.

Basic hours of work are 8am to 4pm, but the post holder will be expected to work flexibly in order to allow contact with students and medical trainees out of hours as well as when OSCEs and Final exams are occurring. For these purposes, the post equates to an average of 24 hours/week.
(bespoke timetable subject to study days and compulsory attendance on Mondays and Thursdays)

Arrangements and entitlements for annual and study leave: Leave is arranged by mutual agreement with the Undergraduate Programme Directors and in accordance with standard Trust/NHS regulations. It is essential that a minimum six weeks’ notice is given to allow for proper planning and prevent cancellations of planned teaching / clinical sessions.
Entitlements are pro rata and therefore for this post there is an entitlement of 18 study days (including PG Cert campus days) and an annual leave entitlement of either 16 or 19 days, dependent on point of salary scale, over a 12 month contract.

Time will be made available to attend meetings, etc. for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

All Doctors are required to undertake the administrative duties associated with the discharge of their duties and responsibilities.

The successful candidate will be required to reside within reasonable travelling time of the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital.

The Trust requires the appointee to have and maintain full registration with a licence to practice with the General Medical Council. Medical and Dental Staff are advised to continue to be members of one of the medical defence organisations.

The Trust has University Hospital status which provides an academic environment to the hospital. We welcome medical students from the UCL Medical School throughout the year and by arrangement with the medical school provide a programme of clinical placements to support their education.
In addition, we also provide postgraduate training, and have an excellent reputation for junior staff training. Within the Centre of Multi-Professional Educational & Training (COMET) is the Medical Education Department, the library including an IT suite, and the Training & Development Department.
The main aim of the Medical Education Department is to promote postgraduate and continuing medical education and training for all doctors and dentists. The Hospital actively promotes career development and progression for all staff.

The Hospital has excellent access to the surrounding areas with easy access to central London and the rural Chilterns. The rural areas include many attractive villages and towns within easy reach of the Hospital including St Albans and Harpenden.
Excellent schools are found nearby. There is also very good access to the Midlands and North by road using the M1 or A1, or by rail to one of the Luton’s three stations. A direct link using the new ‘Busway’ takes passengers from Luton Train station just 7 minutes to reach a stop that is within a short walking distance of the hospital.
London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes of the hospital.

All applicants will be required to demonstrate a working knowledge of the English language.

Full registration with the General Medical Council is required at time of application.

The appointment will be subject to full Occupational Health Clearance and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidates prior to commencement.
