Opportunity

OQC are seeking a skilled Senior FPGA engineer to help us continue to develop and improve our bleeding edge Quantum Computing technology. If you are experienced in FPGA design with a keen drive to work on new and innovative technologies, we would love to hear from you!

Remuneration
 •  £50 - 70k per annum
 •  25 Days holiday
 •  Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
 •  Pension
 •  Private medical insurance
 •  EAP cash plan
 •  Group life and group income protection
 •  Hybrid working
 •  Cycle to work scheme
 •  EV Car Scheme
 •  Gym and wellness benefits

The Role

The control system is a critical component of our Quantum Computing stack, which is responsible for generating and analysing the microwave pulses necessary for controlling the qubits. The FPGA is very much at the heart of this system as it translates a quantum circuit's intent (as defined by software) into the electrical signals necessary to realise it.

As an FPGA engineer, you will draw upon your previous experience in RTL design, verification and testing to develop and deploy novel quantum computing control solutions. You will take full ownership of your projects, and be responsible for managing your day to day activities.
As we deploy our systems internationally, you will also be involved in collaborative work with other teams to support deployment and trouble-shoot systems as necessary.

No prior experience in quantum computing is necessary although it would be advantageous.

Responsibilities include:

 •  Collaborating with internal teams to create and improve FPGA based solutions for controlling quantum computers
 •  Maintain and incrementally improve existing services based on technical and business led requirements.
 •  Responsible for the development and improvement of robust test infrastructure
 •  Problem solving collaboratively with other teams on both deployed and research led systems
 •  Helping to educate others about how and why the FPGA platform functions as it does to build a broader understanding.
 •  Work proactively within an agile team environment, ensuring exceptionally good interactions with stakeholders and the wider business

Skills + experience
 •  Experience developing code using Verilog and/or VHDL
 •  Experience and understanding of FPGA test methodologies
 •  Able to understand and iterate on existing designs and the ability to learn and understand why systems have been implemented as they have
 •  Confident explaining the underlying operation of an FPGA design to people less familiar
 •  Experience working with Digital Signal Processing
 •  Experience defining physical/timing constraints and performing timing closure
 •  Ability to write software for tool automation and low level testing ideally in python
 •  Familiarity with laboratory tools and hands-on experience testing solutions on hardware
 •  Strong problem solving, troubleshooting and analysis skills
 •  Creative mindset for developing solutions to unique and challenging problems
 •  Technically versatile and able to learn new skills that you can apply across multiple types of work
 •  Degree in electronics or related subject or extensive career experience

The following would also be desirable:

 •  FPGA design and verification experience
 •  Experience designing applications for RF / SDR or similar
 •  Familiarity with analog to digital (and vice versa) converters
 •  Experience working with RF components
 •  Experience designing for Xilinx FPGAs
 •  Familiarity with GIT workflows and CI/CD (Continuous integration and continuous development)

Research has shown that women are less likely than men to apply for this role if they do not have solid experience in 100% of these areas. Please know that this list is indicative and that we would still love to hear from you even if you feel you only are a 75% match.
Skills can be learnt, diversity cannot.
