Why this role is important for CPI’s work

The Manager of Data Science will lead and manage the ITDS Data Science team to deliver innovative data-driven solutions for internal and external projects in the scientific and business domains. They will be responsible for providing managerial support, performance management, recruitment, development, and allocation of resources to ensure project delivery and longer-term planning of deliverables.
They will collaborate with other teams across ITDS, to design and develop data solutions that align with the overall strategy. Additionally, the Manager of Data Science will work with internal partners, external partners, stakeholders and contractors to scope and deliver strategic technical solutions across a broad range of activities.
As a key member of the ITDS team, the Manager of Data Science will provide domain knowledge expertise relating to the collection, modelling, and visualisation of scientific and operational data. They will also stay current on emerging technologies, best practices in software development, data science, cloud and machine Learning/AI, and use this knowledge to evaluate possible solutions for projects and clients.

Key Responsibilities:

To maintain consistent and documented compliance with all relevant Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Data Integrity (DI), quality and best practice requirements.

To effectively manage the ITDS Data Science team’s goals and performance, sharing and translating area strategy, ensuring identification and delivery of goals, through the utilisation of appropriate management styles, providing feedback and motivation to team members and enabling individuals to meet their potential.
This includes providing strong managerial support, performance management, recruitment, development, and allocation of resources to ensure project delivery and longer-term planning of deliverables.

To undertake management activities to ensure the smooth running of the group including:

 •  Medium to long-term forecasting and planning of activities and objectives.
 •  Setting team and individual objectives to meet departmental, technology team, and company objectives, contributing to the wider strategy.
 •  Identifying and conducting performance management activities to ensure behaviours and performance of team meet required expectations, providing training and/or relevant support where needed and individual objectives to meet ITDS goals and CPI business objectives.

Act as a point of contact for team members’ queries and escalations with regards to more complex matters.

Conduct regular meetings, one to one sessions and performance development conversations with team members to ensure high levels of communication, feedback, and performance across the team.

To work with the ITDS leadership to ensure that the team are accessible and working in a way that aligns with the overall strategy.

Collaborate across the ITDS team to ensure a one ITDS team approach to the design and delivery of innovative data-driven solutions that meet the requirements of internal and external projects in both the scientific and business domains.

Provide domain knowledge expertise relating to the collection, modelling, and visualisation of scientific and operational data.

Work together with the cybersecurity team to ensure that all solutions and applications developed conform to reasonably practicable levels of security given the nature of the data involved.

Support the business development team in the scoping and authoring of new project proposal documents and submissions to ensure that ITDS can manage its projects

Contribute to the implementation of best practices and standardized processes in ITDS, such as documentation, source control, and DevOps methodologies, to enhance the efficiency and quality of software development and data science across the team.

Work with external partners, technology providers, and contractors to scope and deliver strategic, procurement activities and technical solutions across a broad range of activities.

Support (or lead) the development of technology roadmaps for the company’s digital and operational technology initiatives.

Serve the business by assisting key stakeholders with the scoping, definition, and submission of new projects to ITDS ITAPP process.

Responsibilities specific to role

Possess and maintain a technical understanding of the equipment and processes that generate scientific and operational data within CPI and hence be able to drive and inform the correct handling of large and complex data sets by data scientists/engineers.

Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in software development, data science, cloud and machine Learning/AI. Hence use this knowledge to the scope and evaluate possible solutions for projects and clients.

Forge and maintain strong relationships with digital leads and technologists across CPI’s business units, offering expert advice and guidance that fosters a cohesive and collaborative approach across the organization within the areas of data science, cloud platforms, and software development.

Maintain a core understanding of the managed services within cloud computing platforms and be able to advise which service is best for which application. Be able to create high-level cloud architectures based on this understanding that facilitates ingestion, ETL, modelling, and visualisation of scientific and business data.

Provide expertise and advice as to how IT and digital could be utilised within new business ventures or to drive digital transformational activities across CPI in areas such as decarbonisation.

Develop and maintain an understanding of good practices and regulations relating to the storage and transformation of data, specifically in relation to GMP, and patient data.

Develop/maintain a high-level understanding of all common programming languages, web frameworks, database solutions, and machine learning/AI approaches to be able to provide consultancy or advice on the best approach or solution for a given project.

Expand CPI’s overall capability in the areas of data science, application development, cloud computing, and machine Learning/AI to ensure that CPI can win a greater portion of projects that possess a significant digital component and can stay ahead of the competition.

The person we are seeking

The successful candidate will be educated to at least HNC/Foundation Degree plus significant and in-depth industrial experience of operating at an expert level. It is essential that you Possess a significant experimental background within the R&D space and have compelling evidence of highly complex problem-solving and project delivery.
