MHST Locality Clinical Lead - North East Essex | NELFT NHS Foundation Trust

We are looking for an experienced Mental Health Practitioner to join our fast-growing fast-paced Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) in North East Essex.

MHST’s are a new service designed to support children and young people with mild to moderate mental health and emotional wellbeing difficulties within education settings. We are a multidisciplinary team made up of Children and Young People’s Mental Health Practitioners and Education Mental Health Practitioners.

MHSTs aims to:
 •  Support children and young people with mild to moderate mental health problems through evidence-based interventions
 •  Support schools in developing their whole school approach to mental health
 •  Provide timely advice to school staff and to liaise with other services to help children and young people get the right help and stay in education.

North East Essex (covering Colchester and Tendring ) supports up to 28,000 young people across a variety of different education settings with further expansion planned for 2025.

Work in partnership with schools, to support children, young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties and their families in the self-management of presenting difficulties.

Work in partnership with schools, children, young people, and families in the development of plans for the intervention and agreed outcomes.

To oversee the formulation and treatment and management plans for schools, parents, children, and young people being supported by the senior team members - using a range of specialist psychological interventions appropriate to the service, individual and group.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment.
As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focussing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

This MHST Locality Clinical Lead post is designed to support the clinical development and delivery of the Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) in Essex. We are looking to recruit an applicantwith expertise in the delivery of CBT to children and young people (CYP) and their families to manage anxiety, low mood, and behavioural problems.
Experience delivering supervision using a CBT framework is highly desirable, as is experience conducting clinical audits and evaluating research data to inform the delivery and development of clinical services.

The post holder will be responsible for supporting the delivery of evidence-based CBT interventions in schools/colleges and providing supervision to members of the senior clinical team in South East Essex. They would be expected to hold a small case load of cases with moderate levels of complexity and to oversee the clinical delivery and development of MHSTs across schools in their locality.
The post holder will be responsible for developing the MHSTs to facilitate wider service transformation within the local child mental health system – this will be in conjunction with service leads and managers. The aim is to foster the integration of clinical and educational principles to support CYP with mental health concerns and develop pathways that encourage a positive needs-based approach to accessing mental health provision for CYP.

The post holder would be expected to work closely with the other Locality Clinical Leads based in Essex, as well as the Educational Lead and Strategic Clinical Lead. They would also be expected to contribute to the training opportunities available for more junior members of staff to support their development.
For Clinical Psychology applicants the supervision of Assistant Psychologists and DClinPsy Trainees would form part of this role, as part of increasing access to psychological therapies for CYP and supporting psychological workforce development.
There would be opportunities to contribute to local DClinPsy training courses, as well as opportunities to support others in the service undertaking research to inform best practice and improve clinical care

Teaching, Training and Supervision

The successful candidate may have the opportunity to attend the CYP-IAPT Supervision course to fulfil the requirements of the training element of the post including practical, academic, and practice-based assessments.

Support senior staff in the co-delivery of training sessions. This will include attendance at practice skills sessions, involvement in formative feedback sessions with teaching staff, and co-production of elements of the curriculum.

Service Development and Management

Under the direction of the Clinical & Strategic Lead, to support the strategic and practical development of the MHST initiative within the service and wider children’s mental health system.

To manage and screen referrals into the MHST.

To help manage the day-to-day running of the Mental Health Support Team at an operational level.

To regulate and manage the case load of the seniors and EMHPs.

To take a lead in monitoring clinical outcomes and activity data from the work of the new team.

This post is largely agile working, ability to work independently within your home environment is an important factor. Some travel around the county is also expected. A nominal base of 900 The Crescent, Colchester is given although this is negotiable.

This role will include working with the locality-based Clinical Leads and the Educational Lead, under the guidance of the Clinical & Strategic Lead. Excellent opportunities will be available for training and professional development, with regular supervision and access to other support via NELFT.
