The Opportunity

We are looking for an individual with a strong theoretical understanding of Quantum computing who is excited for the opportunity to put theory into practice and contribute to OQC’s mission to put quantum computing in the hands of humanity.

The Role

Our Software team is seeking someone with both an understanding of Quantum information theory and experience with programming to help utilise quantum computing theory for an improved quantum computing offering.

This is a rare chance to be a theorist in a hardware company. The post holder will have access to Quantum computers and the opportunity to put theory into practice with tangible real-world results. The successful candidate will work as part of our Quantum Software team and will work closely with our other Quantum Engineers in the business.

This role will be focused on finding routes forward in areas such as Quantum error mitigation, Quantum error correction and Runtime improvements as well as implementing and optimising new features in our stack. They will help develop our open source compiler and build connections in the open source community.

Long term, depending on the skills of the successful candidate, this role could develop more towards quantum RnD and implementation of error mitigation or towards a pure software engineer role.

Responsibilities will include:

 •  Defining directions of work for the quantum half of our compiler
 •  Upskill other members of the team to support those with a background in classical computing to understand the quantum field
 •  Cross-team Research & Development work
 •  Support the wider business on anything related to these quantum topics

Required Skills and Experience
 •  Strong knowledge of Quantum theory
 •  A background in numerical analysis and proven ability to apply these to problems
 •  Understanding and experience working with Quantum computing
 •  Must have some demonstrable experience of programming in languages such as Python/Matlab/Fortran
 •  Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to a cross-functional audience
 •  PhD in a relevant field or a strong MSc with relevant experience
 •  Excellent problem solving, troubleshooting and analysis skills
 •  Capability and eagerness to learn independently about new subject area(s) and underlying technologies and to proactively translate those for different audiences
 •  Proactive and enthusiastic attitude towards complex and varying work projects, whether working independently or in a team

Desired Skills
 •  Quantum error mitigation and/or Quantum algorithm experience
 •  Ability to work embedded in an agile team environment; ideally familiarity with project management
 •  Scientific publication/presentation of results, whether in person or in writing, within a relevant field
 •  Experience working with HPCs or data or compute intensive problems
 •  Experience in open sourcing code.

Research has shown that women are less likely than men to apply for this role if they do not have solid experience in 100% of these areas. Please know that this list is indicative and that we would still love to hear from you even if you feel you only are a 75% match.
Skills can be learnt, diversity cannot.
