We are offering an exciting opportunity to work on Kingfisher ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), which is a short stay investigation unit for endocrinology / metabolic medicine and gastroenterology patients.

We are looking for NMC-registered band 6 nurses to join a well-established team at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

Kingfisher ward provides care for newborns, infants, children and teenagers with endocrine, metabolic and gastroenterology conditions. We are a nurse led investigation unit where we carry out specific tests on patients who are either day cases or admitted for several days.

Endocrine conditions include: Congenital Adrenal hypoplasia, Hyperinsulinism, Septic Optic Dysplasia, Diabetes, Growth Hormone defects, Cortisol deficiency and various others.

Metabolic conditions we care for are several types of children who have Mucopolysaccharidoses which is a rare genetic storage disease. We also care for children with maple syrup urine disease, PKU and various others.

Gastroenterology conditions include: Crohns disease, coeliac disease, IBD, IBS, chronic constipation, chronic reflux to name a few.

About the role

Kingfisher ward is a 16 bedded children's unit caring for babies and young children who require medical investigations and tests. Some patients are seen as day cases, while others are admitted for one night or more. If a child is coming to Kingfisher Ward, this admission will have been planned with a clear idea of the investigations they need.
The ward is a family focused environment for children and their families; with the aim of providing high quality, evidence-based care. Our philosophy of care is family centred and encompasses multi-disciplinary working in a friendly and supportive environment.
There are opportunities for staff to gain experience and skills in cannulation and phlebotomy.

Majority of tests carried out on Kingfisher ware include blood and hormone tests, tests on suspected or known endocrine, metabolic, renal, neurology, dermatology, rheumatology, gastroenterology or urology disorders.

Children on Kingfisher Ward are cared for by a large multi-disciplinary team which includes highly qualified nurses and clinical nurse specialists, specialist medical colleagues, physiotherapists, pharmacists, healthcare assistants, play specialists and house-keeping staff.

Culture ClubRequirements for this role

NMC Registration nurse - paediatrics
Relevant nursing qualification with 2-3 years post-graduation experience
NIC experience
Evidence of leading a team and taking charge of a ward
Experience of managing fast throughput of patients
Specialist knowledge in Metabolic, endocrine and/or gastro
Venepuncture and cannulation competent would be desirable
Assessor or practice supervisor qualification/experience is desirable
Evidence of ongoing professional development linked to demonstrable competencies
Experience of working with acute/chronically sick children or specialised transferrable skills
Understand the importance of research and evidence-based practice
Excellent understanding of professional and current issues in children's nursing
Understanding of safeguarding issues according to Trust policies and procedures
Understating or evidence of fulfilling requirements for Revalidation
Understanding of principles of clinical governance (e.g. risk management, audit, quality)
Knowledge of clinical incidents and complaints and reporting, ward specialities are advantageous
Ability to work well both in a team and on own initiative
Good time management skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Computer literate
