The role of the Advanced Practitioner is as a non-medical practitioner, working as part of the Clinical Oncology team, under the supervision of a Consultant Medical and Clinical Oncologist.

The post holder will provide clinical expertise and advice for oncology chemotherapy patients. They will demonstrate a sound understanding of the issues related to the identification, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of malignant oncology conditions and pre and post chemotherapy patients.
Be involved in consultant clinics and assist in pre chemotherapy assessments and planning, and emergency attendance avoidance. They will have a key role within the MDT acting as a liaison between all members of the multi-disciplinary team, to allow for seamless and efficient care.

They will monitor and improve standards of care through supervision of practice, clinical audit, evidence-based practice, teaching and supporting professional colleagues and the provision of skilled professional leadership. They will participate in clinical governance within the service by undertaking audit and research as part of the MDT.

Under the direction of a Consultant Oncologist; • Provide advanced levels of clinical practice, knowledge and skills in Oncology
 •  Undertake Pre-SACT assessment and physical examination as directed by the Oncology team
 •  Assess the need for and order investigations within scope of practice
 •  They will have a clear understanding of their boundaries and know when to involve the Consultant Oncologist
 •  Manage SACT and supportive medications including assessment, review and non-medical prescribing where appropriate and in accordance with legislation.
 •  Manage own caseload with decision-making responsibilities e.g. fitness for treatment
 •  Undertake the process of gaining informed consent
 •  Prepare accurate and concise reports both verbally and
 •  Facilitating the continuity of care of patients
 •  Arranging appropriate pre and post SACT investigations as part of the MDT
 •  Providing ACP-led medication and review clinics
 •  Provide a visible clinical profile, having both an advisory and clinical input into patient care as directed by the Lead Clinician.
 •  Post treatment care, including assessment, treatment review and identification of treatment induced problems and complications
 •  Deploy high level communication skills and effective communication strategies to ensure that information and knowledge is imparted sensitively according to the needs of patients, staff and students in training.
 •  A variety of outpatient activities, including seeing patients as and when they are deemed competent to do so

The post holder will; • Attend mandatory training and reviews as local
 •  To promote and contribute to the development of the newly introduced role within the trust, being aware of role boundaries. Actively engage in assessment and development of competence through observed and supervised practice.
 •  Maintain high standards of care delivery through continuing professional development, evidence based reflective practice and the maintenance of a professional portfolio and record of competency evidence and assessments, ensuring adherence to risk management and health and safety requirements.
 •  To act as a resource and provide teaching, supervision, support and assessment to both doctors and nursing staff as appropriate.
 •  Educate all colleagues both medical and nursing of the newly introduced
 •  Maintain and develop own professional knowledge and
 •  Comply with the NMC/HPC codes of
 •  Participate and lead in undertaking clinical audit and trails

As an Autonomous Practitioner you will; • Manage and prioritise a caseload of patients
 •  Support the consultants in managing patient pathways
 •  Be highly visible in relevant areas across the Trust and ensure agreed policies and pathways are being followed by all departments.
 •  Lead and contribute to the development of MDT/team objectives for the service/speciality.
 •  Work across organisations and different agencies
 •  Provide leadership to the nursing team
 •  Contribute to local, regional and national clinical networks and speciality specific groups, working in partnership with other key professionals.
 •  Maintain personal standards of conduct and behaviour consistent with Trust and professional
 •  Demonstrate autonomously the ability to allocate, coordinate, monitor and assess own workload and that of individuals or the service.
 •  Ensure appropriate use of resources in order to meet service/client’s
 •  Identify gaps in service provision and in agreement with the MDT implement changes required to improve service provision
 •  Provide expertise to organisational committees which impact on service
