Aerial Survey Investigator

HISTORIC ENGLAND | York | jobs.theguardian.com |
Summary

We are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.

Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Aerial Survey Investigator.

This post is part of a national team of aerial archaeology specialists delivering high quality research for Historic England. The post involves interpretation, mapping and analysis of archaeological or architectural information on aerial photographs and airborne laser scanning data (lidar).
You will identify previously unrecorded archaeological remains, provide better awareness of the historic environment and inform the protection and management of the historic environment.

You will gather, analyse and interpret research material on archaeological, and more rarely architectural, sites and landscapes to disseminate the findings to engage a range of audiences. In collaboration with the Aerial Survey team, you will participate in developing methodological, technical and sector developments that deserve consideration in maintaining state-of-the-art research in aerial archaeological survey.
The post also involves contributions to the development and delivery of training in a range of contexts.

You will contribute to research and deliver projects in fulfilment of the aims of the Historic England Corporate Plan. This will include Shared Services research for the English Heritage Trust, support for Regions Group casework, and for strategic projects.

What you will be doing

Project contribution. As required, contribute your expertise to aerial and multi-disciplinary projects, working constructively with the allocated project manager. Gather, analyse and interpret mapping data and research material, and disseminate the findings in a clear and exemplary fashion to inform the protection and management of the historic environment.

Contribute to publications and outreach in a range of formats including research reports, articles, social media and events as required by the project.

Capacity-building. As outlined with the Aerial Survey Manager, contribute to the design and delivery of archaeological investigation skills development and Historic England’s wider capacity building, training and guidance programmes.

Continue to develop personal research skills and contribute to the work and reputation of the Aerial Survey team by maintaining and developing experience, expertise, technical and methodological skills and approaches required for archaeological investigation.

Integrated work practice. Maintain effective links with relevant staff across and beyond Historic England through specialist advice, casework assistance and projects. Internally this includes Archaeological Investigation Team, Strategy and Listing, Sector Skills, and Regions Group colleagues.
Work with external partners includes Shared Service work for the English Heritage Trust.

Research and Development. Contribute as appropriate to project development and delivery of inter-disciplinary approaches and innovation for English archaeological practice.

Maintain a high personal profile in remote sensing in archaeology by participating in expert groups as outlined with the Aerial Survey Manager. Help promote the work of the Aerial Survey team through professional and public engagement activities and contribute promotion of the team’s work through social media, in particular the successful @HE_Archaeology Twitter feed.

Intelligent Client. Contribute, as required, expert advice in a timely and constructive manner to quality control work undertaken by Historic England grant-funded contractors.

Income generation. Contribute, as required, expert information to inform grant bids to UK Research Councils.

Who we are looking for:

 •  A high standard academic qualification or equivalent professional experience in archaeology or a related subject.
 •  Experience as a practitioner in archaeological aerial survey work and landscape archaeology with proven experience and ability to analyse and disseminate archaeological information on aerial photographs and lidar.
 •  Proven experience as a successful team player including adoption of new skills and new ways of working.
 •  Good verbal and written communication skills.
 •  Strong digital skills, including the use of GIS for data creation and analysis.

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance.

We are an inclusive employer and believe that flexible working options are for everyone. We want to make sure our working arrangements don’t prevent anyone from joining us because of their personal circumstances. We also want to provide you with the best balance in your home and work life that we can.

We are open to considering options including job sharing, part-time working, compressed hours working and different working locations, including hybrid working. Please visit our jobs pages or contact us to find out more.

Why work for Historic England
