The postholder will assist in ensuring a high quality patient experience whilst the patient is in the care of the Nuclear Medicine Section.

The postholder will assist with the management of radioactive materials and waste, and carry out equipment related, administrative and clerical tasks according to written procedures and under the direction of the Chief Technologist.

The post entails direct patient care, carrying out basic Nuclear Medicine investigations under indirect supervision, gaining peripheral venous access, operation of sensitive equipment and day-to-day stock control.

The postholder will assist in ensuring a high quality patient experience whilst the patient is in the care of the Nuclear Medicine Section.

The postholder will assist with the management of radioactive materials and waste, and carry out equipment related, administrative and clerical tasks according to written procedures and under the direction of the Chief Technologist.

The post entails direct patient care, carrying out basic Nuclear Medicine investigations under indirect supervision, gaining peripheral venous access, operation of sensitive equipment and day-to-day stock control.

The postholder will assist with Nuclear Medicine imaging and non-imaging investigations acting under indirect supervision, as follows:

Assist with preparation: explain procedures to the patient and help motivate them, assist in laying out of supplies for special procedures, assist in obtaining relevant patient history

Select the appropriate imaging protocol on the gamma camera operating computer

Position the patient in preparation for simple and complex investigations (e.g. bone scans, cardiac scans)

Acquire simple image views e.g. planar bone scan images and lung scan images

Transfer standard images to PACS

The postholder will independently provide direct patient care as follows:

Assisting patients to get on and off examination couches and to the toilet, including the use of hoists, pat slides, slide sheets, wheelchairs and rotunda’s

Escort and transport patients and relatives, including: liaison with porters and reception staff regarding timely transport of patients to and from the department;
Assist patients to dress/undress as necessary

Assist other staff with the management of difficult patients

Ensure continued patient safety in the scanning room

At any time while responsible for the patient, report any concerns about their well being to a more senior member of staff

At all times provide support, empathy and encouragement to patients.
