We are looking for dynamic and motivated individuals to join our hard-working Trauma and Orthopaedic Department at Whiston Hospital.

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Directorate works across both Whiston and St Helens Hospitals providing day case, in-patient and out-patient services to elective and non-elective patients.

The post holder will be designated a team of patients, ensuring and maintaining the safe delivery of quality patient care.

The post holder is required to be enthusiastic with a passion for excellence within the delivery of patient care, be able to work as a member of the team and will continue to help provide high standards of care. The successful candidate must possess a compassionate and positive manner, with excellent communication skills and the ability to ‘CARE’

An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.
 •  To contribute to the delivery of quality patient care by participating in and providing the assessment, planning, provision and evaluation of individualised care
 •  To assist in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients in accordance with local policy
 •  To participate in the developing and monitoring of standards of care and other quality initiatives in a positive manner
 •  To fulfil the role of the departmental triage nurse, utilising advanced skills of assessment, prioritisation, decision-making, risk management and communication skills
 •  To always be caring, approachable and display a consistently professional manner
 •  Promote the safeguarding of vulnerable patients in line with national and local policy

The Secretary of State has approved the partnership between St Helens & Knowsley and Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.

From 1st July we have come together as a single organisation under the name Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

KEY DUTIES

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
 •  Maintain Professional Registration
 •  Practice at all times within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Practice.
 •  To attend trust statutory and mandatory training as required and any other training courses relevant to the post.
 •  To present an appearance which gives a positive image of the trust and a manner, which is appropriate and inspires confidence.
 •  To ensure fulfilment of the requirements for the professional updating and maintain a personal record for future registration purposes.
 •  Ensure individualise care plans are in place for all patients in the designated clinical area.
 •  To ensure privacy and dignity of patients is paramount and not compromised.
 •  Ensure effective communication processes are in place to meet the needs of patients, relatives and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
 •  Responsible for setting an agreed standard of patient care and ensuring its delivery, monitored by audit.
 •  Provide clinical and professional advice to other members of the nursing team.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
 •  Report untoward incidents/accidents in accordance with the trust policy, ensuring a datix is completed.
 •  Set a high standard of record keeping regarding patient care which is comprehensive, concise and valid.

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES
 •  Act as a mentor/preceptor to staff.
 •  Promote an effective learning environment.
 •  Clinically support staff in achieving their work based competencies.
 •  Continue to develop own knowledge through training, education and professional updates.

LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
 •  Promote health, safety and security of self and others and implement best practice.
 •  Act as an effective role model and demonstrate leadership skills.
 •  Create a climate conducive to the practice of a high standard of care, ensuring the safety and well-being of staff, patients and visitors to the department.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
 •  Ensure that equipment is maintained in safe working order and stock level managed within the available financial resource.
 •  To Identify options for cost improvements and support and monitor their implementation.

RESEARCH & AUDIT
 •  Participate in research and clinical audit programmes in order to foster innovative practice and contribute to the development of services and quality initiatives in conjunction with the Ward Manager.
