Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man.

The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in our dynamic IT Operations team? As our IT Operations Manager, you’ll be at the heart of ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the Trust’s server and desktop infrastructure.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Proactive and Reactive Management: Oversee and manage our server and desktop infrastructure, ensuring everything runs seamlessly.
  • Problem Management: Collaborate with specialist areas to tackle issues head-on, ensuring SLA targets are consistently met.
  • Technical Escalation Point: Act as the go-to expert for resolving technical incidents involving servers, networks, telephony, and desktops.
  • Senior IT Support: Provide top-tier IT support and break-fix services to the Trust and our valued stakeholder organisations.

Main duties of the job

As IT Operations Manager you'll oversee the Technical Services Team, ensuring secure and consistent delivery of server, network, and telephony services. They will manage both proactive and reactive aspects of the server and desktop infrastructure, support problem management, and act as the escalation point for technical incidents.

The role includes providing senior IT support, working weekends and unsociable hours when necessary, and participating in the on-call rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As the IT Operations Manager you will have responsibility for server and storage infrastructure, network voice and data services and collaborate with other teams and partner organisations both clinical and administrative working the Trusts.

You will be the lead in project delivery and implementation support of key infrastructure in areas and will be responsible for delivering business as usual technical support services for several key areas 24/7

You'll also fill a supervisory level role in overseeing the day-to-day operations and activities of the technical services department managing a team of technical service engineers and procurement services. They establish and enforce team policies, procedures, and client relations standards.

Your strong technical expertise enables you to effectively identify and mitigate technological risks and deficiencies, analyse cyber and information security threats, and recommend improvements. Additionally, you have experience supporting proof of concept activities for new digital solutions.

As an excellent communicator, you’ll be comfortable liaising with customers and translating technical requirements for staff at all levels. You’ll bridge the gap between technical concepts and user needs, while effectively communicating technical solutions to stakeholders and developers.

You'll also have excellent organisational skills, being able to analyse complex service provision issues and make complex resource allocation decisions.

The role will also require you to support the wider management team in managing contracts with third-party suppliers to ensure value for money and responsiveness. You'll assist with financial planning and budgeting, manage project budgets, and highlighting cost pressures.

Finally, as a strong leader, you'll be committed to both your personal professional development whilst providing guidance, mentorship and career development and training opportunities for team members.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Post graduate Diploma in relevant subject or equivalent experience.
  • Technical/ Cyber qualification or equivalent experience
  • ITIL Foundation
Desirable criteria
  • Formal project management qualification
  • ITIL Advanced Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant management experience
  • Sound knowledge of operational IT Service Delivery including operational management experience
  • Experience of setting up and implementing internal processes and procedures
  • Experience of working within the NHS or healthcare setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience within a customer services environment
  • Experience in dealing with security related products and/or incidents.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Significant knowledge of IT systems and procedures acquired through a combination of specialist training and relevant study to degree or equivalent level
  • Management of Virtual Server hypervisor technology,M365, Azure and remote access technologies
  • In depth knowledge of Microsoft 365
  • An understanding of the requirements of the NHS customer organisations and the appropriateness of emerging technologies and techniques to these organisations
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the national Data Security and Protection Toolkit.
  • Understanding of the NHS Cyber Alert process and NHS Digital good practice Guidelines

  • Excellent written and verbal communicator with ability to express views and ideas that may be highly complex and describing technical solutions to customers in clear and non technical language.
