This post provides an exciting opportunity for an appropriately skilled speech and language therapist ( SLT ) to move into a highly specialist role within the clinical areas of long term neurological conditions ( LTC ), joining our dynamic team of Band 7 leaders across community SLT services.

Main duties of the job

To provide a Highly Specialist SLT Service to Mid Nottinghamshire Community patients who have a communication or swallowing impairment due to long term neurological conditions.

To take a lead role in assessment and treatment of a caseload of patients with complex communication and swallowing needs, also supporting the other pathways at times when there is greater need.

To participate in multi-disciplinary assessment and therapy where appropriate and to engage with the agencies that can support service users and their carers during their rehabilitation journey

To provide day-to-day co-ordination, support and clinical supervision of Speech and Language Therapists, SLT assistants, and students.

To contribute to service development initiatives and audit where appropriate.

To keep up to date with innovation in AAC equipment and App development

To facilitate diverse and high-quality therapy placements across the service, support staff to develop and enjoy positive roles and experiences as therapy clinical educators which contributes to key AHP workforce strategies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Speech and Language Therapist with highly specialist skills within the clinical area of long term conditions, however a background of working within Stroke and Specialist Medicine and Dementia would also be advantageous.
They will have experience of working with patients who have both communication and swallowing disorders, in community settings. The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership; take a lead role in the assessment and treatment of a complex and diverse caseload of patients, and provide day-to-day co-ordination, support, clinical supervision and appraisal of less experienced Speech and Language Therapists, SLT assistants, and students.

They will coordinate and deliver specialist training to other professionals, as required, and will become involved in service-wide initiatives related to their clinical specialism

The role also involves working closely with other Band 7 team leaders across the South and Mid-Notts Community Teams. The post holder would be expected to contribute to ongoing service development, innovation and improvement.

The successful post-holder will have experience of working in the community and enjoy working as part of a uni-professional team. The post holder will have experience of managing patients with long term progressive conditions, be able to identify patients’ needs, and offer appropriate packages of care.

They will also have experience of supervising SLT assistants and junior SLTs. They will have experience of using AAC in a clinical setting and using technology therapeutically.

The SLT department offers close support from other team members and a peer supervision programme. Line management will be provided by the Head of Service. We are a large Nottinghamshire county wide service which provides opportunities to further develop specialist skills and knowledge.

You must have :

  • A recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification
  • Registration with Health and Care Professions Council – License to Practice
  • Registered as a member of RCSLT
The post-holder will be required, to travel out from the base to attend training events, meetings, domiciliary visits etc. However, there has been an increase in the opportunity for home working and the use of digital technology allowing meetings and supervision to take place via Microsoft Teams.

This platform has also been used to provide individual patient assessment and management, also group therapy.

A full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification.
  • Health Professions Council – Licence to Practice
  • Registered member of RCSLT
  • Post-graduate experience in specialist area
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s Degree

Previous experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with specialist client group
  • Experience of working in the community/outpatient setting
  • Experience of service planning and project management.
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced dysphagia skills
  • Advanced skills working with communication disorders
  • Experience of AAC and of using technology therapeutically.

Knoweldge and skills

Essential criteria
  • Highly specialist knowledge underpinned by current evidence-based practice
  • Well-established knowledge of a broad range of assessments relevant to specialist client group and extensive knowledge of a range of appropriate specialist therapeutic interventions
  • Proven application of current theories and practices on rehabilitation
  • Evidence of strong commitment to team and partnership working, and leadership skills
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency approach
  • Well-established knowledge of national policies, guidelines and procedures related to client group
  • Established organsiational skills and experience of caseload management
  • Understanding of the principles of clinical governance/audit
  • Proven staff development and leadership including mentoring and clinical supervision.

  • Evidence of management/leadership training and development.
