What is the purpose of this job?

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) brings together the companies that run Britain’s railway into a single team with one goal - to deliver a better railway for passengers and their communities.

All the passenger and freight rail companies are members of the RDG, as well as Network Rail and HS2. RDG provides services and support to enable its members to succeed in transforming and delivering a successful railway, benefiting customers, taxpayers and the economy.

The Digital Ticketing Services (DTS) is part of RDG and provides an industry shared service to enable the use of smart ticket solutions by delivering a high performing back office service which enables a national smart ticketing system for now and the future.

The DTS will enable Train Operating Companies (TOCs) to deliver a fully interoperable service which allows their customers to travel seamlessly across Great Britain. The DTS will also enable TOCs to offer new/future smart ticketing solutions and the ability to increase intelligence on journeys through access to new data.

We are offering an exciting opportunity be part of a growing team with a pipeline of exciting smart ticketing projects. The DTS Programmes & Projects Team team plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the strategy of the department and industry, delivered through projects, is implemented to agreed timescales, scope and budget.

Working closely with the Technical and Test Teams as well as a small team of business analysts, the Delivery Manager role will also play a critical role in managing a varied and widespread set of stakeholders.

What can I expect to do in this job?

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but things you can expect to be involved with include:

  • The Delivery Manager, working with Train Operating Companies, their suppliers, strategic suppliers (e.g. DfT & GBRTT), and internal solution, technical and test and compliance specialists, will provide and end-to-end delivery and project management capability from initial scoping through to transition to live service deployment of DTS initiatives.
  • Managing and delivering end to end projects through project initiation, delivery and closure using key Project Management tools (planning, risk and issue management for example).
  • Where appropriate, building business cases to secure funding to deliver certain projects.
  • Working closely with TOC or DTS suppliers so they understand the DTS Service and can add value through their expert knowledge.
  • Establishing clear and consistent communication with all stakeholders, supplier and internal colleagues.
  • Working with a team of technical and test and compliance specialists to ensure solutions are developed to agreed standards.
  • Keeping other key DTS teams appraised of delivery issues, changes or delays as appropriate.
  • Utilising and maintaining appropriate project management tools.
  • Managing, monitoring and reporting on project budgets
  • Escalating issues and concerns to DTS Senior Delivery Managers and/or the DTS Programmes & Projects Lead.
Requirements
  • Educated to degree level.
  • Project Management qualification e.g. PRINCE2, APM etc or significant vocational experience, demonstrating development through involvement in a series of progressively more demanding, relevant and technical project management roles, and the acquisition of appropriate professional or specialist knowledge.
  • Managing complex and time critical technical projects with multiple stakeholders is essential.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Ability to manage and influence stakeholder expectations at all levels within RDG and the rail industry is essential.
  • Excellent cost and cash flow management skills are essential
  • Previous experience of implementing ITSO Smart Ticketing solutions in the Rail Industry is highly desirable.
