Join Social Security Scotland's Chief Digital Office as an Associate Software Developer and kickstart your career in a positive, inclusive environment. You’ll collaborate in a multidisciplinary team to deliver software components that support our vital social security programme.

With guidance from experienced developers, you’ll develop skills in design, coding, testing, and system integration. Key skills required include foundational knowledge of API and integration design, a collaborative approach, and effective communication.

Social Security Scotland, an Executive Agency of the Scottish Government, is undertaking the largest and most complex IT and digital change programme since devolution. With a lifetime budget of over £300m, Social Security Scotland is delivering a social security system that will support the people of Scotland for decades to come.

The Associate Software Developer role will sit within Social Security Scotland’s Chief Digital Office (CDO), which has a remit to provide infrastructure and systems to support both the wider social security programme and Social Security Scotland.

An Associate Software Developer learns on the job by delivering software components.

At this role level, you will:
  • Develop skills while working under supervision to deliver stories in a multidisciplinary team
  • Understand and be proficient in different types of testing
  • Be aware of but not responsible for security
  • Coach and mentor more junior colleagues

DDaT Pay Supplement

This post is part of the Scottish Government Digital, Data and Technology (DDAT) profession and as a member of the profession you will join the professional development system. This post currently attracts a £5,000 annual DDAT pay supplement, applicable after a 3 months competency qualifying period.

The payment will be backdated to your start date in the role. Pay supplements are reviewed regularly and there is one currently underway. Changes will be communicated when the review is concluded.

Main Duties
  • Collaborate to improve service availability and ensure systems can handle the expected workload.
  • Participate in activities to ensure information security.
  • Add security features to our solutions and services.
  • Follow modern guidelines whilst learning from more experienced team members.
  • Help design, write, test, and document simple programmes or scripts with supervision.
  • Use techniques for creating prototypes.
  • Help to fix issues by following agreed procedures.
  • Complete assigned maintenance tasks on our infrastructure systems.
  • Help design parts of larger systems as part of a team.
  • Assist in connecting different systems together.
  • Support the building and testing of connections between systems.
  • Participate in reviewing user experiences.
  • Work from user stories, focusing on what users need.
