Job overview

The Clinical Support Worker (CSW) will function at a higher competency level than that of other Health Care Support Workers (HCSW) with responsibility for actively participating as part of the Multi-Disciplinary Team within Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) and Urgent Care to provide a seamless service to patients and relatives.

The CSW will work under proximal supervision from an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) and carry out assigned clinical tasks involving direct patient care and associated administrative duties.

This position is not currently eligible for a certificate of sponsorship in line with Home Office guidance as it does not appear on the skilled worker visa occupation list.

Main duties of the job

The delivery of clinical and therapeutic care, within the clinical setting within set protocols and within the scope of the CSW, under the guidance and supervision of the ACP.

Organise and prioritise time and work activities effectively.

Contributes to the delivery of nursing care ensuring the highest possible standard under supervision of the ACP. Undertakes a range of delegated clinical care duties, records patients observations and collects specimens and samples as instructed

Under supervision and appropriate delegation from the ACP, assess patients’ conditions through basic test results and clinical observations.

Ensure care is documented accurately and in a timely manner as per Trust policy and contributes to updating patients records.

Ensure that patients and relatives are treated with courtesy at all times and the individual needs of patients are respected, promoting and valuing the rights, responsibilities and diversity of people. Patients must be treated with privacy and dignity.

Maintain a safe working environment, reporting incidents, accidents and complaints. Understand the need to maintain and respect patient confidentiality

Promotes and participates in Health Education.

Maintain confidentiality of all patients and work related issues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Participates in the welcoming and reception of patients in the clinical area, supporting the assessment process and liaising with the Advanced Clinical Practitioner and medical teams.

Participates in the delivery of care in conjunction with the ACPs and medical teams. Ensuring assistance is provided with patients activities of daily living.

Assists in creating an environment which meets the needs of patients, relatives and carers.

Has the skills, knowledge and competency to perform the following clinical skills:

 Vital signs and early warning scores

 Urinalysis

 Pregnancy Testing

 Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring

 ECG recording

 Venepuncture

 Peripheral IV access

 Urinary Catheterisation

 Pressure Area Risk Assessment

Ensure adequate skills to maintain/update patients computer records.

Evaluate, analyse and act upon those findings that directly relate to the provision of Same Day Emergency Care

Ensure the ACP is aware of any conditional changes that may affect patient acuity.

Recognise the work load of colleagues and provide support as necessary.

Acts as a mentor, preceptor and /or QCF assessor to junior staff.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care (or care related subject)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Health & Social Care (or care related subject) - or working toward
Desirable criteria
  • ILS

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • has an understanding of working of the acute NHS trust
  • Has an understanding of the risk management issues which may arise

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working within acute NHS trust / care setting
Desirable criteria
  • Ambulatory Care Unit / Urgent care experience

skills

Essential criteria
  • Venepuncture / Cannulation skills or working towards competency
  • ability to use computer systems (Systm 1 / EPR / patient management system)
  • Able to work part of team
Desirable criteria
  • Computer Literate
  • Able to use PAS system and Other electronic Patient Management systems
  • ECG recording
  • Minor Wound care management
  • Taking and recording observations
